[Timelapse] On Fire | Drawing with the Note 10+

On fire

She was burning down everything around her. The blistering heat came too soon, too much, that it was painful. The idea that she was alone on the receiving end of the hurt would have at least comforted her, but everyone else was clamoring. She couldn't bear the weight of being liable to their pain. She needed to turn the situation around.

So she embraced it. The fire. And made it her own.

Drawing On Fire

I think I'm enjoying writing these random drabbles to accompany my digital drawings. It's fun to be a little creative in terms of words once in a while. I think you can say that this is the unofficial sequel of Catching Fire.

About the reference

This drawing is based off one of Gabriel Sosa's colored gel photography projects called Firestarter. I tweaked the drawing a little (like basically making the model naked) to make it more consistent with Catching Fire.

The photography by Sosa looked engaging, which is most definitely a feat. The dynamic feels to it is so attractive that it's literally what made me want to translate it to a digital drawing.

The drawing

I did as I usually would in drawing (as in the timelapse video below). Probably 90% of this drawing utilized MediBang's watercolor brush while the rest was pencil.

The background (minus the sparks) was drawn in using Photoshop's pen tool (and a lot of Gaussian blur). Then the sparks themselves were once again drawn in MediBang on my mobile with both watercolor and pencil brushes... and a few more Gaussian blur.

Finally, about the hair. I decided to screw it and just draw the hair as I can, with little reference to the original photo.

Details

  • Device: Samsung Galaxy Note 10+
  • Apps:
  • Brushes: watercolor (at varying opacity settings); pencil (100% opacity); smudge; blur

Snippet-ish.

Notes

I was actually in an online meeting with @charlocked, @debilog, and our other colleagues when I started the drawing. It was OK, I thought. They wouldn't know that half my attention wasn't with them. My camera was off, my mic was off. I was just listening to the discussion and chatting my answers when asked.

I was even recording the whole drawing! I mean — why the heck not, right? It's been a while since I recorded my process. Until I think karma (from not listening wholeheartedly to an important meeting) just hit me... and my drawing.

MediBang crashed on me. My progress up until that point had been cut to its previous half. Had my microphone been on, I could have shouted a curse for all 13 of us present in the meeting to hear.

Lesson learned: pay attention to a meeting you committed yourself to. Else karma. (I'm still frustrated.)

P.S. Remember the WIPs I kept whining about since last week? They're still WIPs.
