For those who just joined this drawing tips, I have to say that all the drawings in this serial are made on location, without using an eraser, directly inking with a fountain pen. Non-Verbal drawing technique fits very well for plen-air sketching. Working from photograph or reference has no sense in my understanding of drawing.
The reason is Non-Verbal drawing push your mind to the higher level cause the amount of visual information received by the eyes is not comparable to that obtained with a reference. The brain then has to synthesize all that information, summarizing it in some lucky doodles.
Non Verbal drawing prioritizes light and shadow over contours.
Shadows are the key to the whole process, just as in life, where the dark side is the one that brings us closer to a person, in drawing, the shadows are what unite all the parts, giving meaning to everything.
