One of my collectors last year asked if I could paint a larger version of one of my paintings that he owns. I was happy to fulfil he request as the painting has quite a few subtle plays of colour that I find interesting, which painting at a larger scale, I would have a better opportunity to work out than in the smaller version.

I start out with a proportional grid, rather than a regularly spaced grid as this is far superior for place the image features on the canvas and keeping things in proportion, hence the name.

The next step is to block in the painting. I take the opportunity to place the suggestions of the image values.

After the initial block in and values, I can start building the image up from the mid-tones to highlights and down to the shadows.

The above image is nearing finish, but you can see there is clearly further work to be done. At this point, the motivation really kicks in because I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and I can start to hit the flow.
