From 3D to painting

As a 2D/3D artist, one of the things I'm always looking to get better at is combining 3D and 2D looks. This is the latest thing I've done practicing toward that.

Things started out in Quadspinner Gaea, which is a terrain generation software. My favorite in the line of products geared toward this that I've used. (World Machine, World Creator and TerraformFX) It has an incredibly easy node based workflow and it's really easy and straightforward to get pretty amazing results.

Process went something like this

Starting off with the raw 3D render, I went in with some broad color correction and lighting matching. Also added the atmospherics using a z-Depth pass, then ran a series of filters to get the painterly look and take out the small scale details that make things look photographic. This is a cool technique because some things are more efficient and enjoyable for me to make in 3D and some in 2D. It allows me to mix these skillsets but still make a cohesive image.

Hope you like :)
