I could not resist the urge to go back in for another sketch inside this incredible cathedral, and especially inside the cloister.
As I walked down the steps, my eyes were instantly drawn to this stunning glow coming from the stained glass window at the end of this centuries-old stone corridor. To the left was the cloister gardens, which I painted in my previous Plein air post. I just had to come back to these stairs close to the entrance, to do at least a quick study of the colour and light coming through the glass and bouncing off all the tiles and stone. It was captivating, to me anyway.
I was mostly left uninterrupted during the Plein air sketch, apart from a tour group, and one or two of them who photographed me painting from over my shoulder, who then pretended they never did such a thing as I turned around.
Quite an experience sitting and painting in this 12th-century medieval architecture.
And apart from one other study I left unfinished on location in Lisbon, that was the final sketch before spending the next few days town/city-hopping by bus and train in the north of Portugal at a fast pace, before returning to England.
Painted with watercolour & gouache.
Thank you for reading my post,
