From my limited D&D experience it seems that part of the fun is playing to how the character should be. It was interesting to see a reference to the game in the new Scrubs.

Bingo... "roleplaying" is part of the genre name, after all.
And I'd say whatever extra knowledge I have over you in D&D is balanced out by my lack of knowledge about recent television... I didn't even know there was a new Scrubs!
New Scrubs (on Disney+) is similar to the old one, but some characters are not in it and they have new ones.
D&D does seep into general culture. It's even had the odd movie. Mind you, all sorts of games and toys are getting movies. The studios like to trade on known brand names.
