Hey Hive!
We're back again with another Art Attack! If you're new to the series, this is where I share my drawings and the process behind them. A behind-the-scenes look at my artwork, if you will. This is not to say that I'm very good at art, or that I'm a professional in any way. In fact this is the opposite, and serves as a reminder to how I first started, and lets me track my progress too!
So a while back I posted an art piece I did for one of my moderators' birthday based on a character from the game Stardew Valley! Both of us love the game a lot and used to play it together for a while so I thought of drawing his wife in the game Emily, along with her favourite painting.
To draw this I actually followed a few tutorials and applied what I learned from those videos to make this. One of the tutorials I did was to draw the very sand dunes in that painting! I know it looks simple but I wanted to make it look nice and Art with Flo has a very helpful tutorial, and she even draws different versions of the sand dune with different colours and scenes!
Art with Flo is a youtube art channel I've been following ever since I got Procreate since she does lots of good tutorials on the app. She also has a series called You Can Draw This, where she takes you through the process of drawing a piece step by step. I love her videos since they're really easy to follow and she even gives the colour palettes and brushes that she uses in the video as well.
So for the first sand dune, we change the background to a light yellow and start with a simple triangle and a curly line from the tip going down.
Then we fill in the colour of the dune on the left side a darker shade and fill in an orange sun.
And that's one done! The next one will be a night version which is basically the complementary colours of the light version.
Flo provides the colour palettes for all her tutorial videos so we just drag in the colours on Procreate.
But this time since it's a night scene, we can change the sun to a moon and while a full moon looks nice, a crescent one would be more stylised.
To make it more semi-realistic and add more details, we add a gradient in the background for the sky.
We also add some stars since it's night time and Flo also made a more realistic moon brush that you can get for free that looks really cool!
Next we add some texture to the sand dune and I struggled a little bit on this one. Maybe I should've made the curves thicker.
We add more texture on the dark side as well to give it more depth and I smoothed out the textured strokes. Eventually we end up with this:
It looks pretty simple still but now you can see the added details and textures really make a difference. I really like this version a lot more and I definitely wouldn't have known how to achieve that result if not for the video.
I think in the actual birthday art piece I did go with a the simple version since that's not the main focus of the painting so I wanted to share this as well.
Here's the timelapse for all these:
