THE MINOTAUR

“where there's a labyrinth, there's a minotaur, and vice versa! I can't imagine a decent maze that would be caught dead without a minotaur.”
Catherynne M. Valente, The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There

Here is another early work of mine which I painted the year before attending the University of Lethbridge Art Department. I was very prolific in those days and luckily I had a decent photo of this one. Many of my early works were never recorded.

THE MINOTAUR

THE MINOTAUR - acrylic on canvas, 24 x 18 inches - 61 x 46 cm - 1976

Only recently did I discover that a very talented Philippine writer, Kristine Ong Muslim had written interesting little stories about several of my paintings, and this was one of them.

The stories are without illustration, but on her website she links to the images where she found them - in this case, it was on a blog about me by @leoplaw on his Fantastic Visions site.

MY INTRODUCTION - ABOUT MY WORK

Sort:

No need to say “This is great!”. Absolutely it is chief :)... What I wonder is what would you draw if you had read the story first as if it was published before.

What comes first - the chicken or the egg? I am familiar with the classic minotaur, but the author of this writing wasn't even born yet when I painted it. Maybe that well is deep, because I found some semblance of thought that went into a scene in Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits which came 5 years after my painting.
