A mi parecer las leyendas tienen algo de veracidad. Si bien, son historias habladas de hechos que cuenta el pueblo de generación en generación mediante tradiciones orales. Estas se prestan a múltiples interpretaciones a través de los años. Cada pueblo tiene algo que contar, vivencias del pasado, experiencias colectivas o simplemente sueños que alteran una realidad, alejándola de la cultura ancestral.
Los Gentiles
Hoy te vengo a hablar de “los Gentiles”, quienes me parece que son una de las razas primigenias de la humanidad. Esta ilustración plasma datos de la investigación que realicé y lo que unos amigos, familiares y autores de libros nos cuentan sobre los Gentiles. Siendo este, mi propuesta de personaje para el juego de cartas en línea #Splinterlands .
In my perception, legends contain some truth. Although they are stories told about events that people recount from generation to generation through oral traditions. These lend themselves to multiple interpretations over the years. Every town has something to tell, experiences from the past, collective experiences, or simply dreams that alter reality, distancing it from ancestral culture.
The Gentiles
Today I'm here to talk to you about “the Gentiles,” who I believe to be one of the primitive races of humanity. This illustration reflects data from my research and what friends, family members, and authors have told us about the Gentiles. This is my character entry for the online card game #Splinterlands.
Realicé el boceto a lápiz. Para esto quise que el personaje estuviese alegre, mostrando lo que trae en manos y resaltando su entorno en el que se encuentra. Inicié pasando a tinta su rostro.
I made the sketch in pencil. For this, I wanted the character to be cheerful, showing what he is carrying in his hands and highlighting his context. I started by inking his face.
Continué con el cabello, cuyo volumen es importante, porque tiene características específicas. Seguido de su ropa tradicional a esa época. Aunque, Gentil lleva zapatillas de esta época. Sí, este personaje es anacrónico.
I continued with the hair, whose volume is important because it has specific characteristics. Followed by his traditional clothing from that era. Although Gentil wears sneakers from this era. Yes, this character is anachronistic.
Le agregué elementos característicos de la festividad Halloween, como un pequeño fantasma, una cráneo (calavera) y una calabaza. Los cuales guardan relación de cierta manera. Gentil, es un personaje que viene de un pasado donde en un tiempo coexistieron 2 soles en la Tierra. Y las estrellas estaban todo el día porque no había noche.
I added elements characteristic of the Halloween holiday, such as a little ghost, a skull, and a pumpkin. Which are related in a certain way. Gentil is a character who comes from a past where 2 suns once coexisted on Earth. And the stars were visible all day long because there was no night.
En la imagen anterior empecé a agregarle las sombras al cabello y los ojos, y ahora llegó el turno del fondo, es decir de la calabaza, el fantasma y la calavera.
In the previous image, I started adding shadows to the hair and eyes. Now it's time for the background. Here are the pumpkin, the ghost, and the skull.
La ropa y sus zapatillas son elementos contrastantes, marcando épocas alejadas según el calendario que conocemos. En este momento, me dí cuenta que los 2 soles perdieron protagonismo. Por lo que hice más detalles en los tipos de rayos de luz que emiten cada uno. Uno con onda y otro como partícula.
The clothing and his sneakers are contrasting elements, marking distant eras according to the calendar we know. At that moment, I realized that the 2 suns had lost their protagonism. So I added more details to the types of light rays emitted by each one. One with a wave and the other like a particle.
Y llegó el momento de darle color. ¡Yehhh!. Para esto comencé con el fondo, debido a que se encuentran más alejados del protagonista. Los 2 soles y las estrellas.
And then it was time to add color. Yeahhh! I started with the background, since it's further away from the main subject. The 2 suns and the stars.
Seguido de la calabaza. Aquí pinté varias capas con colores, hasta obtener el volumen propio de la Calabaza tradicional del América del Norte...Yo solo lo veo en las películas, porque donde vivo no tenemos el hábito de sembrarla ni consumirla. Las hojas, el zarcillo y el pedúnculo de la calabaza también son tradicionales de las plantas de la familia cucurbitaceae.
Followed by the pumpkin. Here I painted several layers with colors until I achieved the volume characteristic of the traditional North American pumpkin. I only watch it in movies, because where I live we don't have the habit of planting or eating it. The leaves, tendrils, and peduncle of the pumpkin are also traditional features of plants in the cucurbitaceae family.
Ahora vamos por el personaje principal. Se dice que una de las razas primigenias de la humanidad tenían la piel clara y el cabello rojo. En un inicio, quise que Gentil tuviese mitad del cabello rojo y la otra mitad del cabello más claro, casi blanco.
Now let's move on to the main character. It is said that one of the earliest races of humanity had fair skin and red hair. At first, I wanted Gentil to have half red hair and half lighter, almost white hair.
Luego, volví a la idea principal de representar a Gentil según las Crónicas de la cultura andina. Además, quise que llevase una ropa hecha con hilo de Vicuña, para que mantenga una temperatura fresca durante los días y las noches. Lleva unas zapatillas azules, las cuales fueron teñidas con flores de Tarwi o de papas nativas silvestres que hay en la zona. Fantasma y Calavera están debido a que en estos meses Gentil tiene muy presente a sus ancestros, quienes mantuvieron la armonía durante su gobierno. Y por último, la Calabaza representa que estamos en noviembre y el tamaño de Gentil. Algo me dice que estos seres eran pequeños, traviesos y escurridizos.
Me alegra ver el resultado, fue como unir varias piezas y complementar una versión de la historia poco contada. Desde que escuché de la existencia de los Gentiles, tuve curiosidad por saber de ellos, cómo eran, qué hacían, qué comían, qué aire respiraban, qué animales convivían con ellos... Gentil es un personaje de quien solo hablan los ancianos de los pueblos alejados.
Then, I returned to the main idea of representing Gentil according to the Chronicles of Andean culture. In addition, I wanted him to wear clothing made from vicuña yarn, so that he would stay cool during the days and nights. He wears blue sneakers, which were dyed with Tarwi flowers or wild native potatoes found in the area. Ghost and Skull are there because during these months Gentil is very mindful of his ancestors, who maintained harmony during his reign. And finally, the pumpkin represents that it is November and the size of Gentil. Something tells me that these beings were small, mischievous, and elusive.
I am very happy with the result. It was like putting together various pieces and completing a version of the story that had rarely been told. Ever since I heard about the existence of the Gentiles, I was curious to know about them, what they, were like, what they did, what they ate, what air they breathed, what animals lived with them... Gentile is a character that only the ancients of remote towns talk about.
