Enjoyment is the key. I remember having some of the most fun when I started playing chess, as opposed to when I played more stringently and became better at it. The complexities of chess did become more interesting, so it's also possible that I enjoyed it in a different way.
Regardless, it's ideal when you've found the balance of getting the most enjoyment out of the game. That's the most excellent play. 😊

I think the most fun chess I played was around 1300, when I realized about enough tactics and was able to have a strategy, without the complications that understanding the game at a deeper level bring. I'm sitting at ~1500 now and it has definitely become deeper, but not as fun, maybe I need to get to 1800 to have real fun!
