What Is the Most Valuable Thing I Learned From My Parents?

in The Real Talkyesterday

Growing up, there are many things I can say life has really taught me most especially through my parent, but honestly the most powerful lessons came from my teenage age. Not just by words, but by the way they lived their life everyday. When I was small I didn’t really understand, sometimes I even got annoyed when they corrected me or told me to do something in a certain way. But now as an adult, I look back and I see clearly that those little teachings was like planting seeds inside me.

One of the biggest things my parents taught me is never give up no matter how hard life becomes. My father use to say, “Life will shake you, but make sure you are still standing after the shaking.” Back then I didn’t really get it, I just nodded my head. But as life start happening for real disappointments, bills, heartbreak, stress I now understand his words with my whole heart. Every time I feel like quitting, I remember how he will wake up everyday and still go to work even when he looked tired. That picture never leave my mind.

From my mother I learned kindness is not weakness. She always helped people even when she didn’t have much. Sometimes I was like, “Why give when we still need?” But she always say, “A good heart will never lack.” And truly, I see how life always blessed her back in different ways. She also taught me that respect is important, not just to older people but to everybody, because you never know who God will use to help you.

My parents also taught me family matters. Even when there was arguments or misunderstanding, they always found a way to settle it. They showed that love is not always smooth, but you don’t give up on the people who matter.

Now when I look at myself today, the way I behave, the things I believe, even the way I treat people… I can trace it back to the lessons they put inside me. I might not be perfect, I am still learning everyday, but the foundation they gave me is something I will forever be grateful for.

Truly, we don’t carry only memories from childhood
we carry lessons that build who we become.
