Looking back, my parents are one of the most influential people in my life. However, the one person I think takes the first spot is my role model, Cristainao Ronaldo. Interestingly, I have learnt a lot more lessons from him than I have from any other person. Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying I haven’t learnt lessons from my parents, rather, I am saying the lessons I have learnt from Cristiano Ronaldo are greater in some aspects. I grew up under the shed of my parents. My mom and dad made sure they did everything correctly to lead by example for us, their children. Although they lacked in some areas, it was still evident that they genuinely cared about us and that they did everything to pass on their lessons. Now, the question is, how much of their lessons have helped me in my life?
This brings me to this week’s Real Talk prompt: what is the most valuable thing you learnt from your parents or guardians? As I mentioned above, my parents did everything in their powers to make sure they raised us well. They showered me with many valuable lessons that it is almost impossible to choose the most important one. Before I started writing, I actually thought about this prompt numerous times before I finally arrived at my desired answer. In the long list of lessons I have learnt from my parents, which one is the most valuable?
The most valuable lesson my parents taught me is to stay away from bad company. That lesson has protected me more times than I can count. When I was younger, my parents made it clear that the outside world is filled with lions looking for innocent souls to devour. They warned us that if we got mixed with the bad people, it could lead to disastrous outcomes. Not only did they constantly ring warnings in our ears, they also made sure to establish rules that protected us. For example, we weren’t allowed to go out of the compound to play with other street kids.
At first, we actually thought this was a punishment. I mean, why shouldn't we be allowed to play with the other kids? What was wrong with doing that? It wasn’t until later that I realized that all my mom's teachings about how to avoid bad company were valuable, and I'm grateful that I heeded them. Today, those teachings still help me everywhere I go.
