            THIS WEEK PROMPT

Do We Owe Our Parents Everything, or Just Gratitude?

From the day we’re born, our parents (or guardians) step into a role of sacrifice. Some give up dreams, take extra jobs, or go hungry so their children won’t. In many cultures, this builds an unwritten rule: “children must repay their parents.”

We see it everywhere:

A son pressured to study medicine because his parents invested everything in his education.

A daughter marrying someone she doesn’t love, because her parents arranged it.

Children sending money home monthly, even when they’re struggling themselves, because “that’s what good children do.”

But here’s the other side:
Children didn’t choose to be born that decision belonged to the parents. Should children really live their entire lives as repayment? Or should gratitude be enough respect, care, and appreciation without surrendering freedom?

Many people carry guilt because they feel “selfish” for not meeting family expectations. Others sacrifice their own happiness just to please their parents, while some break away completely to live life on their own terms.

Some say “we owe them everything without them we wouldn’t be here.”

Others argue “we only owe them love and gratitude not our whole lives.”

And some believe in a balance: honor your parents, but don’t lose yourself in the process.

Share your experience or perspective. This is your space to be real. Say what most people are afraid to say.

Remember this is just a guide....
