The other day, I had a reason to visit Ibaraki Prefecture. Since I was already there, I decided to stop by the famous Ushiku Daibutsu.
I heard it’s known for being huge.
Ushiku Daibutsu is a relatively new Buddha statue, built in 1993. Surprisingly, there is an elevator inside, and you can go up to an observation deck 85 meters above the ground to see the view.
Visiting a Buddha statue usually feels like a solemn experience, but the idea of enjoying a nice view at the same time made it feel a little more like a sightseeing trip. I was looking forward to it!
As I got closer by car, I could already see the statue. It was massive.
On the way to the statue, I kept hearing the sound of a bell. It turns out that visitors are allowed to ring a bell along the approach to the temple. This is quite unusual, since most temples and shrines in Japan don’t let the general public ring their bells. I really liked this open and welcoming atmosphere. Of course, I also rang the bell and wished for peace.
When I finally reached the base of the statue, I was overwhelmed by its size. Seeing it up close, I was truly impressed. The statue alone is 100 meters tall!
Before entering the statue, I hesitated to take pictures inside. It felt a little disrespectful to the Buddha. I was surprised to realize that I actually have a stronger sense of faith than I thought.
Then, I took the elevator up to the observation deck.
While waiting in line, I overheard a conversation behind me. A little kid asked their parents, “Why did they build such a big Buddha?”
At first, the mother answered, “Well, this area doesn’t have many tourist attractions. It’s just a big open space, so maybe they wanted something that would stand out.”
Then, the father simply said, “Because they want everyone to be happy.”
I thought his words were simple yet powerful. At the same time, I understood the mother’s point of view too. If my own child asked me the same question, I would probably say something similar to what the mother said. I tend to see things from a practical perspective.
From the observation deck, I could see Tokyo Skytree in the distance. On clear days, you can even see Mt. Fuji. Unfortunately, it was cloudy that day, so I couldn’t see it.
At first, I just wanted to see a really big Buddha, but visiting Ushiku Daibutsu turned out to be much more than that. The freedom to ring the bell, the peaceful atmosphere inside the statue, and the amazing view from the top—all of these made it a unique and memorable experience.

先日茨城県に行く用事があり、せっかく茨城県に来たのなら、有名な牛久大仏を見てみたいと思い寄ることにしました。

歩いて大仏を目指す途中、何度も鐘の音が聞こえたのですが、参拝に来た人は参道にある鐘を鳴らして良いそうです。
神社仏閣で一般人が鐘を勝手に鳴らして良いってゆうところ、あんまりないです。自由な感じがすごく良いなと思いました。私も平和を願い鐘を突きます。
大仏の足元まで来ました。近くで見ると本当に大きい。圧倒されます。
牛久大仏は大仏本体だけで100メートルの高さがあります。
これから大仏の胎内に入るのですが、胎内を写真に撮るのはちょっと大仏さまに失礼かなと思い撮っていません。意外にも信仰心が厚い自分。
エレベーターで展望台までのぼります。
エレベーターを待っている間、列の後ろに並んでいる家族連れの話し声が聞こえてきました。
小学生くらいのお子さんが、どうしてこんな大きな大仏を作ったの？と両親に聞いていました。最初はお母さんの方が、

と言ってたんですが、お父さんの方は
みんなに幸せになってほしいからだよ
と、ひとこと言っていました。
お父さんの言葉は、子供だけでなく万人を納得させるのに十分な言葉だなと思いました。同時にお母さんにも共感しました。あーなんか正に、私も子供に聞かれたらこのお母さんと同じようなこと言うかもしれないです。現実しか見てないタイプなので。（でも妄想グセはすごい）
展望台からは東京のスカイツリーが見えました。天気の良い日は富士山も見えるそうです。
最初は「とにかく大きい大仏を見に行く」という感覚でしたが、実際に訪れてみると、鐘を鳴らす自由な雰囲気や、大仏の胎内での厳かな空間、展望台からの景色など、さまざまな体験ができる場所できて楽しめました。仏教世界を現した壮大なテーマパーク、牛久大仏に行ってよかったです！
