Ever since my university days, holed up in the lab using Adobe Illustrator 3.2, I've stuck with Adobe exclusively. For work, I shelled out over a hundred thousand yen to buy Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop CS2 outright, and I've used them ever since for designing solo exhibition DMs and making zines.
But while you might get away with it if you're raking in the cash with full-time work, designing solo exhibition DMs and making zines doesn't pay the bills. Therefore, I can't afford to pay for the expensive Adobe CC subscription every month (or every year). But I can't keep using the old CS2 forever either. So I decided to introduce a new design software.
At first, I tried Canva. It's advertised as free to use, and you can indeed design to a certain extent for free. But whenever I wanted to use a specific font or material, it turned out to be paid, and I just couldn't quite get that perfect look. You can make something decent easily, but it ends up looking like a Canva creation.
Then I heard about Affinity Designer and considered trying it. It's paid software. However, while it might be fine for illustration or image editing, I learned it's significantly inferior to Adobe software for DTP design. If I'm paying, I want features like vertical text layout and clean kerning.
Well, I suppose Word could handle DTP, but I really dislike how Word always tries to compress images.
In the end, the software I'm currently pushing myself to use is GIMP for painting/image editing, Inkscape for drawing, and Scribus for DTP. GIMP was overwhelmingly complex at first, but after using it for about five years now, I can manage it fairly well. The problem is Inkscape and Scribus. I only got them recently and have used them just a couple of times. I'm not sure if they're robust enough for professional designers, but I think they should be fine for my zine-making needs.

もう大学の頃から、研究室にこもってAdobe Illustrator3.2を使ってからというもののAdobeばかり使ってきて、仕事のためにAdobe Illustrator とPhotoshop のCS2を十何万円も出して買い切って、それをずっと個展のＤＭデザインにもZINE作りにも使ってきた。
しかし、仕事をバリバリやって稼いでいるならともかく、個展のＤＭデザインやZINE作りでは稼げない。したがってAdobe CCの高価なサブスクリプションを毎月（あるいは毎年）支払うわけにはいかない。かといっていつまでも古いCS2を使ってられない。そこで新しいデザインソフトを導入しようと思った。
最初は、Canvaを使ってみたが、無料で使えるという触れ込みだが、確かにある程度は無料でデザインできるが、使いたいフォントや素材があったと思うと有料だったりで、なんかもう一つこれといったのができない。簡単にそれなりのができるがCanvaっぽくなってしまう。
それから、Affinity Designerというソフトもあると聞きこれを使ってみようと考えた時もあった。これは有料ソフトである。しかし、イラストや画像加工をするならともかく、DTPデザインはかなりAdobeのソフトには劣るらしいことがわかってきた。有料なら縦組みとか、きれいな文字詰めとかができてほしい。
まあ、DTPはWordでもいいような気がしているけど、Wordはどうしても画像を圧縮してこようとするのが好きではない。
結局、今頑張って使っているソフトはペイント・画像加工はGIMP、ドローはInkscape、DTPはScribusを導入している。GIMPは最初の頃はあまりの複雑さに辟易したものだが、もう５年くらい使っているからわりと思い通りには使えるようになっていた。問題はInkscapeとScribusだが先日入手してまだ２、３回しか使っていない。デザイナーの使用にたえられるようなものができるかどうか不明だが、私のZINE作りくらいには使えそうな気がしている。
