Hello everyone, dear friends of The Anime Realm, I hope you are doing great today, this time I want to share a new review with you, I will talk to you a little about a curious series... today I will give you my opinions on: Wonder Egg Priority... when this series came out back in 2021, I was very, very sure that it was going to be the anime of the year... but this is one of those stories with two sides, you know? One part is incredible genius and the other is... a catastrophic failure... let's start at the beginning, because those first few minutes are pure magic, without cuts, imagine the scene: a quiet city, at night, everything asleep. And there's our protagonist, Ai Ohto, crouching on the street, watching a dead firefly... it feels melancholic, but very peaceful, suddenly, a strange light flickers and for a second you think you're seeing something from another planet... but no, a car horn sounds, the camera changes and you realize it was just the headlights. Boom!
Back to reality... but the important image is already stuck in your head: a solitary yellow "Wonder Egg", there, in the middle of the road, I swear I felt like I was watching Alice just before she fell down the rabbit hole. It wasn't just a scene to open, it was a statement of principles, they were telling you what it was all about, this feeling nails it, but perfect, the opening. It starts off super slow, with a few piano notes and a voice that's almost a whisper, showing you Ai's rather boring and lonely life... but suddenly, when she meets the other girls who are going to be her friends, the music and images explode in a party of colors and euphoria. It's one of those very few times when the opening isn't just a commercial to sell you the series, it's part of the story... it screams at you that this is going to be something special, something different.
Hola a todos, queridos amigos de The Anime Realm, espero que estén genial el día de hoy, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les hablaré un poco de una serie curiosa.. hoy les daré mis opiniones de: Wonder Egg Priority.. cuando esta serie salió por allá en 2021, yo estaba segurísimo, pero segurísimo, de que iba a ser el anime del año.. pero esta es una de esas historias con dos caras, ¿saben? Una parte es una genialidad increíble y la otra es… un fracaso catastrófico.. vamos a empezar por el principio, porque esos primeros minutos son magia pura, sin cortes, imagínense la escena: una ciudad tranquila, de noche, todo dormido. Y ahí está nuestra prota, Ai Ohto, agachada en la calle, viendo una luciérnaga muerta.. se siente melancólico, pero con mucha paz, de repente, una luz extraña parpadea y por un segundo piensas que estás viendo algo de otro planeta.. pero no, suena la bocina de un coche, la cámara cambia y te das cuenta de que solo eran los faros. ¡Pum!
De vuelta a la realidad.. pero la imagen que importa ya se te quedó grabada en la cabeza: un solitario "Huevo Maravilla" amarillo, ahí, en medio de la carretera, les juro que sentí que estaba viendo a Alicia justo antes de caer por la madriguera del conejo. No era solo una escena para empezar, era una declaración de principios, te estaban diciendo de qué iba la cosa, esta sensación la clava, pero perfecto, el opening. Empieza súper lento, con unas notitas de piano y una voz que casi es un susurro, mostrándote la vida medio aburrida y solitaria de Ai.. pero de repente, cuando conoce a las otras chicas que van a ser sus amigas, la música y las imágenes explotan en una fiesta de colores y euforia, es de esas poquísimas veces en que el opening no es solo un comercial para venderte la serie, es parte de la historia.. te grita que esto va a ser algo especial, algo diferente.
And the plot, what can I say! At first glance you think: "Ah, another magical girl" .. but no, not at all, this was like taking the magical girl genre and passing it through a dark, super psychological filter, Ai is a super quiet high school girl who hardly ever leaves her house anymore.. she gets bullied because she has heterochromia, that is, one eye of each color, but the real nail in the heart is that her only and best friend, Koito, has just committed suicide.. then, guided by a mysterious voice, Ai enters a dream world every time she breaks one of these "Wonder Eggs". Inside each egg is a girl who also took her own life, and Ai has to protect them from monsters that are, literally, the embodiment of her traumas. If she saves enough of them, the promise is that she will be able to bring Koito back... it's one of those premises that hits you right in the pit of your stomach, mixing the surrealism of Alice in Wonderland with the densest and most visceral horror of a master like Junji Ito.
The symbolism in the first chapters was crazy. The egg, to begin with, is a super powerful image: fragility, a new life, the chance to be reborn... and it's no coincidence that Ai, in her worst moments, curls up in the fetal position, imitating the shape of the egg. The villains... ugh, the villains! They weren't just any monster that came out of their sleeve; They were grotesque creatures, full of color, but they were born from the specific pain that drove each girl to take her own life... one monster born from the abuse of a teacher, another from merciless bullying... and to defeat them, Ai couldn't just reach out and hit them harder. No. The mission was only truly completed when the girl she was protecting found the strength to face her own pain, in other words, a brutal and extremely mature concept that made it clear that failure was a real option.
And visually? Wow, this series was a work of art... the studio, CloverWorks, absolutely killed it, they were working at a level that is almost never seen in a weekly series; you felt like you were watching a movie every week... the vibrant colors clashed in an incredible way with the delicate designs of the girls and the dark themes of the story. The animation in the fights, the sakuga, was something to stand up and applaud, it was insane... but, you know what? It was the quiet moments that really won me over, those extreme close-ups so full of detail that you couldn't blink... the "photography" of the series was spectacular, there's a scene where Ai and another girl are talking by a lake, and their reflections in the water look all distorted... a perfect visual metaphor for how they felt inside, all broken.
Y la trama, ¡qué les puedo decir! A simple vista uno piensa: "Ah, otra de chicas mágicas".. pero no, para nada, esto era como agarrar el género de chicas mágicas y pasarlo por un filtro oscuro, súper psicológico, Ai es una chica de secundaria súper callada que ya casi ni sale de su casa.. le hacen bullying porque tiene heterocromía, o sea, un ojo de cada color, pero el verdadero clavo en el corazón es que su única y mejor amiga, Koito, se acaba de suicidar.. entonces, guiada por una voz misteriosa, Ai se mete a un mundo de sueños cada vez que rompe uno de estos "Huevos Maravilla". Dentro de cada huevo hay una chica que también se quitó la vida, y Ai tiene que protegerlas de monstruos que son, literal, la encarnación de sus traumas, si salva a suficientes, la promesa es que va a poder traer de vuelta a Koito.. es una de esas premisas que te pega directo en la boca del estómago, mezclando lo surrealista de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas con el horror más denso y visceral de un maestro como Junji Ito.
El simbolismo en los primeros capítulos era una cosa de locos. El huevo, para empezar, es una imagen súper potente: fragilidad, una nueva vida, la chance de renacer.. y no es casualidad que Ai, en sus peores momentos, se ponga en posición fetal, imitando la forma del huevo, los villanos... ¡uff, los villanos! No eran cualquier monstruo que se sacaron de la manga; eran unas criaturas grotescas, llenas de color, pero que nacían del dolor específico que llevó a cada chica a quitarse la vida.. un monstruo que nació del abuso de un profe, otro del bullying sin piedad.. y para vencerlos, Ai no podía nomás llegar y pegarles más fuerte. No. La misión solo se completaba de verdad cuando la chica que protegía encontraba la fuerza para encarar su propio dolor, o sea, un concepto brutal y súper maduro que te dejaba claro que fallar era una opción real.
Y en lo visual? Wow, esta serie era una obra de arte.. el estudio, CloverWorks, se la voló, estaban trabajando a un nivel que casi nunca se ve en una serie semanal; sentías que estabas viendo una película de cine cada semana.. los colores vibrantes chocaban de una forma increíble con los diseños tan delicados de las chicas y con los temas tan oscuros de la historia. La animación en las peleas, el sakuga, era para pararse y aplaudir, una locura.. pero, ¿saben qué? Fueron los momentos de calma los que de verdad me compraron, esos primerísimos planos llenos de detalle que te obligaban a no pestañear.. la "fotografía" de la serie era espectacular, hay una escena donde Ai y otra chica están hablando junto a un lago, y sus reflejos en el agua se ven todos distorsionados... una metáfora visual perfecta de cómo ellas mismas se sentían por dentro, todas rotas.
The series spoke to you as if in code, constantly using the language of flowers to give it more layers of meaning. Suddenly, you'd see some white lilacs in a hallway—which are a symbol of purity, but they're also flowers often used at funerals—just before you met a new girl who had died. It was a series that, as someone once said, "silently screamed at us not to be mere spectators." It begged you to look closely, to see the pain hidden behind a smile, to understand the small details that reveal a whole universe of suffering. Violence was almost never shown to you head-on in the real world; everything was more suggested, the consequences were shown to you. But in the world of dreams, yes, all the cruelty was unleashed, because that's where the trauma lived: inside the characters... and the protagonists... they were the heart of it all.
Ai and the other three girls she hangs out with—Neiru, Rika, and Momoe—are truly wonderful. Each one has her own unique vibe, personality, mission, and way of dealing with grief. You could have followed any one of them and it would have been fascinating. They felt like real-life teenagers: imperfect, sometimes half-conceited, emotionally immature, and struggling a lot to figure out what the hell was going on. Their conversations, their fights, and the budding friendship were what emotionally anchored you to the show. For the first six or seven episodes, I was in heaven. The show was going full steam ahead, with everything, it was beautiful, intelligent, it hit you right in the heart, and it was so, so unique. I kept recommending it to everyone. And then... everything went to hell. It's hard to say exactly when, but about halfway through, the show started to lose its bearings. All the cool symbolism started to fall apart.
The fights stopped being about facing trauma and became more about fighting generic monsters, the visuals started to eat away at the story, which became repetitive and seemed to forget to develop the protagonists. I felt like the series was going from being a super well thought out and deep psychological drama to... something much simpler, more so-so... and if it had stayed there, being a nice series with wasted potential, well, it would have been a disappointment and that's it. But no, things got much, much worse, out of nowhere, the series started introducing new elements that had absolutely nothing to do with the world that had already been presented to us... magical pets appeared that felt like they were just trying to sell you dolls. Then they threw in some villains called "Haters" who never really explained who they were or what they wanted... then the story completely derailed, they introduced androids... parallel dimensions... then, cloned characters!?
La serie te hablaba como en clave, usaba a cada rato el lenguaje de las flores para darle más capas de significado, de repente veías unas lilas blancas en un pasillo —que son un símbolo de pureza, pero también son flores que se usan mucho en los funerales— justo antes de que conocieras a una nueva chica que se había muerto.. era una serie que, como dijo alguien por ahí, "nos gritaba en silencio que no fuéramos simples espectadores".. te rogaba que te fijaras bien, que vieras el dolor que se esconde detrás de una sonrisa, que entendieras los pequeños detalles que te revelan todo un universo de sufrimiento. La violencia casi nunca te la mostraban de frente en el mundo real; todo era más sugerido, te mostraban las consecuencias, pero en el mundo de los sueños, ahí sí, se soltaba toda la crueldad, porque ahí es donde vivía el trauma: adentro de los personajes.. y las protagonistas... ellas eran el corazón de todo esto.
Ai y las otras tres chicas con las que se junta —Neiru, Rika y Momoe— son una maravilla, de verdad, cada una tiene su propia onda, su personalidad, su misión y su forma de lidiar con el duelo.. podrías haber seguido la historia de cualquiera de ellas y hubiera sido fascinante. Se sentían como adolescentes de carne y hueso: imperfectas, a veces medio creídas, inmaduras emocionalmente y batallando un montón para entender qué carajos pasaba, sus pláticas, sus peleas y esa amistad que iba naciendo eran lo que te anclaba emocionalmente a la serie. Durante los primeros seis, siete capítulos, yo estaba en el cielo.. la serie iba a toda máquina, con todo, era hermosa, inteligente, te pegaba en el corazón y era súper, súper única.. yo se la andaba recomendando a todo el mundo. Y entonces... todo se fue al carajo, es difícil decir exactamente cuándo pasó, pero como a la mitad, la serie empezó a perder el norte.. el simbolismo tan chido se empezó a diluir.
Las peleas dejaron de ser sobre enfrentar traumas y se volvieron más en pelear contra monstruos genéricos, lo visual se empezó a comer a la historia, que se volvió repetitiva y como que se olvidó de desarrollar a las protas. Sentí que la serie estaba pasando de ser un drama psicológico súper bien pensado y profundo a... algo mucho más simple, más equis.. y si se hubiera quedado ahí, en ser una serie bonita con potencial desperdiciado, pues bueno, hubiera sido una decepción y ya. Pero no, la cosa se puso mucho, pero mucho, peor, de la nada, la serie empezó a meter elementos nuevos que no tenían absolutamente nada que ver con el mundo que ya nos habían presentado.. aparecieron mascotas mágicas que se sentían como si nomás quisieran venderte muñecos. Luego nos metieron a unos villanos llamados "Haters" que jamás te explicaron bien quiénes eran o qué querían.. entonces, la historia ya descarriló por completo, metieron androides.. dimensiones paralelas..luego, ¡personajes clonados!?
The series that began as this super symbolic, dreamlike journey about grief and trauma suddenly turned into a super convoluted sci-fi mess... mind you, mixing genres isn't a bad thing. There's Madoka Magica, which perfectly blended magical girls with aliens and time travel, but there, everything felt natural, it served the story... here it felt like they panicked and desperately tried to explain everything. They tried to cram the entire explanation into a single episode, episode 11... the crappiest thing is that episode is incredibly animated and directed, on par with the first one. The problem is that it feels like it's from another series, from a completely different anime. It's like a separate story they used to pull a "deus ex machina" out of their sleeve, not to resolve anything, but to try to forcefully justify a story that no longer made any sense.
It was so weird I didn't even know what to call it, it's like they built a beautiful, super complex house of cards, and at the end they told you that everything held together because "there was an android in the basement." It makes no sense! Instead of explaining it, it ruined everything, the first half of the special, incredibly, was another recap! And the second half, the 20 minutes we were all waiting for, resolved nothing at all... it was mostly a slice-of-life epilogue to an arc that never ended, and to top it all off, it ended on another cliffhanger, implying that there would be a second season that, to this day, hasn't even been confirmed and will most likely never exist... so where does all this leave us? Wonder Egg Priority is one of the biggest tragedies in anime in recent years.
It started out as a profound, beautiful, super-intelligent work of art —a mix of fantasy, existentialism, and social critique— and ended up as a shallow, horribly structured sci-fi disaster that went nowhere. Watching it is an exercise in brutal contrasts. The first half is a 10 out of 10, by the book. The second half is a 2 out of 10, if anything. If we average everything out, and just because the first half was so spectacularly good, I give it a 6/10. The beautiful corpse of what could have been is still there, but you can’t ignore that in the end, well, it is a corpse. I feel frustrated, disappointed, and, most of all, sad for what we lost. So, you know, if you want excellent animation, but a story that loses its way and completely derails, you know where to look. And that’s it for today’s review, take care! Bye!
La serie que empezó como este viaje súper simbólico y onírico sobre el duelo y el trauma, de la nada, se convirtió en un desmadre de ciencia ficción súper enredado.. ojo, mezclar géneros no está mal. Ahí tienen a Madoka Magica, que mezcló perfecto chicas mágicas con aliens y viajes en el tiempo, pero allá, todo se sentía natural, servía para la historia.. acá se sintió como que les entró el pánico y trataron de explicar todo a la desesperada. Quisieron aventarnos toda la explicación en un solo capítulo, el 11.. lo más cagado es que el capítulo está increíblemente animado y dirigido, al nivel del primero, el problema es que parece de otra serie, de otro anime completamente distinto, es como un cuento aparte que usaron para sacarse un "deus ex machina" de la manga, no para resolver algo, sino para tratar de justificar a la fuerza una historia que ya no tenía ni pies ni cabeza.
Fue tan raro que ni sabía cómo llamarlo, es como si hubieran construido un castillo de naipes precioso, súper complejo, y al final te dijeran que todo se sostenía porque "había un androide en el sótano". ¡No tiene sentido! En lugar de explicarlo, lo arruinó todo, la primera mitad del especial, increíblemente, fue ¡otro resumen! Y la segunda mitad, los 20 minutitos que todos estábamos esperando, no resolvió nada de nada.. fue más que nada un epílogo medio slice-of-life para un arco que nunca terminó, y para colmo, acabó con otro cliffhanger, dándonos a entender que habría una segunda temporada que, hasta hoy, ni se ha confirmado y lo más seguro es que nunca vaya a existir.. entonces, ¿a dónde nos deja todo esto? Wonder Egg Priority es una de las tragedias más grandes del anime de los últimos años.
Empezó como una obra de arte profunda, hermosa, súper inteligente —una mezcla de fantasía, existencialismo y crítica social— y terminó en un desastre de ciencia ficción superficial y con una estructura horrible que no llegó a ningún lado, verla es un ejercicio de contrastes brutales.. la primera mitad es un 10 de 10, de manual. La segunda, un 2 de 10, si acaso.. si promediamos todo, y nomás porque la primera mitad fue tan espectacularmente buena, le doy un 6/10.. el cadáver hermoso de lo que pudo ser sigue ahí, pero no puedes ignorar que al final, pues, es un cadáver.. me siento frustrado, decepcionado y, más que nada, triste por lo que perdimos.. así que ya saben, si quieren una animación excelente, pero una historia que pierde su rumbo, y se descarrila completamente ya saben dónde buscar.. y hasta aquí la reseña de hoy, cuidense mucho! Everyone's opinion may be different but after reading your review I wasn't really interested in it maybe I just don't like it or the story excites me that much. I agree with what you said. At first it seemed a bit interesting but then the story slowly became boring. Although I have never heard of this anime. Thank you very much for your review.

Tengo mucho tiempo que no veo este anime. Si es cierto que recuerdo apenas una escena del final que me dejó loco. Una pasada de lanza sin sentido alguno. Me dieron ganas de verla ahora que acabo de leer tu reseña.
