Hello everyone, dear friends of The Anime Realm, I hope you're all doing great. On this occasion, I want to share a new review with my opinions, and this time we're talking about: Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead. If you were even remotely involved in the anime community in 2023, it was impossible not to run into the hype. It seemed to come out of nowhere and then, boom!, it completely blew up. Let me tell you something, the excitement was totally justified, especially after watching that first episode. I'm not lying when I say it was one of the best premieres I saw in all of 2023. It was absolutely insane, the direction was spectacular, the animation was a feast for the eyes, and it had an energy that was contagious, grabbing you and never letting go. They knew exactly what they were doing: they came in kicking down the door, looking to capture your attention from the very first second, and boy, did they succeed.
But here's what makes Zom 100 so incredible and, honestly, what makes people either love it or hate it. The reason that first episode hits so hard isn't just because of the zombies... it's because for our protagonist, Akira Tendo, the zombie apocalypse is, basically, a salvation. We spend the first half of the episode seeing his life before, and it's... ugh, super depressing. He's a recent graduate who lands what he thought was his dream job at a production company, only to realize he's fallen into a corporate hell, one of those super exploitative, soul-sucking jobs. We're talking 20-hour workdays, sleeping under his desk, losing his passion for everything, and literally becoming just another robot in the system. Everything in his world looks gray, dull, lifeless. He was already a zombie long before the real zombies showed up. Then, one morning, it happens. He goes to pay his rent and finds his landlord, well... eating another neighbor. The world has ended.
And Akira's reaction? Joy... pure and total joy. In that moment, the world explodes in vibrant, psychedelic colors. Blood is no longer just red; it's like a splash of paint in every color of the rainbow, like a paintball match that went completely wild. That visual decision is EVERYTHING. It's the series telling you to your face: "Hey, this isn't your typical dark and depressing zombie story." This is a story about being free. It's a harsh critique of how today's work culture, especially in places like Japan, can be a fate worse than death. The series throws a powerful question at you: what's the difference between merely existing and truly living? For Akira, the constant threat of being eaten by a zombie is a small price to pay for the freedom to escape the hell of his daily grind.
Hola a todos, queridos amigos de The Anime Realm, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión les quiero compartir una nueva reseña con mis opiniones, está vez toca hablar de: Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead..si estuvieron medio metidos en la comunidad del anime el año 2023, era imposible no haberse topado con el hype que había, parecía que salió de la nada y, de repente, ¡pum!, la rompió por completo, déjenme decirles algo, la emoción tenía toda la razón de ser, sobre todo después de ver ese primer capítulo. No les miento cuando les digo que fue uno de los mejores estrenos que vi en todo 2023.. fue una absoluta locura, la dirección era espectacular, la animación una delicia para los ojos y tenía una energía que te contagiaba, te atrapaba y ya no te soltaba, ellos sabían perfectamente lo que estaban haciendo: llegaron pateando la puerta, buscando captar tu atención desde el primer segundo, y vaya que lo lograron.
Pero aquí viene lo que hace a Zom 100 tan increíble y, la verdad, lo que hace que la gente o la ame o la odie, la razón por la que ese primer capítulo te pega tan duro no es solo por los zombis.. es porque para nuestro prota, Akira Tendo, el apocalipsis zombi es, básicamente, una salvación, pasamos la primera mitad del capítulo viendo su vida de antes, y es... uf, súper deprimente. Es un chico recién graduado que consigue lo que él creía que era el trabajo de sus sueños en una productora, solo para darse cuenta de que cayó en un infierno corporativo, uno de esos trabajos súper explotadores que te chupan el alma, estamos hablando de jornadas de 20 horas, de dormir debajo del escritorio, de perderle la pasión a todo y convertirse, literal, en un robot más del sistema, todo en su mundo se ve gris, apagado, sin vida. Él ya era un zombi mucho antes de que aparecieran los zombis de verdad.. entonces, una mañana, pasa. Va a pagar la renta y se encuentra a su casero, pues... comiéndose a otro vecin, el mundo se acabó.
Y la reacción de Akira? Alegría.. pura y total alegría, en ese momento, el mundo explota en colores vibrantes, psicodélicos, la sangre ya no es solo roja; es como un splash de pintura de todos los colores del arcoíris, como una partida de paintball que se descontroló por completo. Esa decisión visual lo es TODO. Es la serie diciéndote en la cara: "Oye, esta no es tu típica historia de zombis oscura y bajonera".. esta es una historia sobre ser libre, es una crítica durísima a cómo la cultura del trabajo de hoy, especialmente en lugares como Japón, puede ser un destino peor que la muerte, la serie te lanza una pregunta súper potente: ¿cuál es la diferencia entre solamente existir y vivir de verdad? Para Akira, la amenaza constante de que te devore un zombi es un precio pequeño a pagar por la libertad de escapar del infierno de su día a día en la chamba
And this is where the crown jewel comes in, the famous "bucket list" from the title. Realizing he could die at any moment, Akira decides he's not just going to survive, he's going to LIVE. He grabs an old notebook and starts writing "100 things I want to do before I become a zombie." This list, my friends, is the engine for the whole story. It's not about finding a cure or building a bunker; it's about finally getting a big-screen TV, riding a motorcycle... rediscovering all those little joys that his job had stolen from him. Every item he crosses off the list is a step toward leaving behind that empty-eyed guy he used to be. It's his way of reclaiming his humanity in an adventure that is thrilling and, often, ridiculously fun. It's a brilliant idea that speaks to the meaning of life and how to break free from the hamster wheel routine that society puts us all in. Now, look, I know what some of you are thinking, and I've seen the comments.
Some people found the tone to be completely out of place. They say things like: "How can these characters be joking around and celebrating getting a TV when people are dying everywhere? They're acting like a bunch of idiots with no common sense!" And you know what? I get it. If you go into Zom 100 expecting a super serious and raw survival horror like The Walking Dead or even Highschool of the Dead, you're going to be sorely disappointed. The characters, especially Akira and his best friend Kencho, often prioritize their desires over survival. They aren't survival experts; they're two friends who life has given a free pass to do whatever the hell they want, and they're taking full advantage of it. The comedy is constant, it's lighthearted, and yes, sometimes it feels a bit weird to see that in the middle of an apocalypse. But honestly, I feel like the people who criticize it for being "silly" just didn't get what it's all about. This series isn't trying to be a realistic zombie story.
It's a parody of the genre. It's using the apocalypse as a pretext, as a super exaggerated setting to explore what it truly means to live a full life. Akira isn't trying to survive forever; he's trying to live before he dies. That's a theme that, I think, resonates deeply with all of us, especially if you've ever felt trapped in a job or a routine that's consuming your soul. The series constantly drops these little truths about how your job isn't your whole life. There's so much more than just working and paying bills. It's a message that hit home for me, and I bet it will hit many other hardworking adults right in the heart.
Y aquí es donde entra la joya de la corona, la famosa “lista de deseos” del título.. al darse cuenta de que se puede morir en cualquier momento, Akira decide que no solo va a sobrevivir, sino que va a VIVIR, agarra un cuaderno viejo y empieza a escribir “100 cosas que quiero hacer antes de convertirme en zombi”. Esta lista, mi gente, es el motor de toda la historia.. no se trata de encontrar una cura o de construir un búnker, se trata de, por fin de conseguir una tele de pantalla gigante, de andar en moto… de redescubrir todas esas pequeñas alegrías que el trabajo le había robado, cada cosa que tacha de la lista es un paso para dejar atrás a ese tipo con la mirada vacía que era antes. Es su forma de recuperar su humanidad, en una aventura que es emocionante y, muchas veces, ridículamente divertida.. es una idea genial que te habla del sentido de la vida y de cómo salir de esa rutina de hámster en la que la sociedad nos mete a todos, ahora, a ver, yo sé lo que algunos están pensando, y ya he visto los comentarios.
Hay gente a la que el tono le pareció totalmente fuera de lugar.. dicen cosas como: “¿Cómo pueden estos personajes estar bromeando y celebrando que consiguieron una tele cuando hay gente muriendo por todos lados? ¡Actúan como un montón de idiotas sin sentido común!”. Y ¿saben qué? Los entiendo.. si te metes a ver Zom 100 esperando un survival horror súper serio y crudo como The Walking Dead o hasta Highschool of the Dead, te vas a llevar una decepción tremenda, los personajes, sobre todo Akira y su mejor amigo Kencho, muchas veces le dan más importancia a sus deseos que a sobrevivir.. no son expertos en supervivencia; son dos amigos a los que la vida les dio un pase libre para hacer lo que se les dé la gana y lo están aprovechando al máximo. La comedia es constante, es ligera, y sí, a veces se siente un poco raro ver eso en medio de un apocalipsis, pero, sinceramente, siento que la gente que la critica por ser “tonta” es porque no entendió de qué va la cosa, esta serie no está intentando ser una historia realista de zombis.
Es una parodia del género.. está usando el apocalipsis como excusa, como un escenario súper exagerado para explorar lo que de verdad significa vivir una vida plena, Akira no está tratando de sobrevivir para siempre; está tratando de vivir antes de morir.. ese es un tema que, creo, nos llega muy adentro a todos, sobre todo si alguna vez te has sentido atrapado en un trabajo o una rutina que te está consumiendo el alma, la serie a cada rato te suelta estas pequeñas verdades sobre cómo tu trabajo no es tu vida entera. Hay mucho más que solo trabajar y pagar las cuentas.. es un mensaje que a mí me pegó, y apuesto a que a muchos otros adultos que se matan trabajando les va a llegar directo al cora.
And visually, my friends, uff, the series is a 10 out of 10. That "paintball" vibe I mentioned wasn't just a one-episode thing; the animation stayed super colorful and fluid throughout the entire series. The action scenes are insane, incredibly dynamic, and a blast to watch. And to think that this is the first major project from a new studio, Bug Films... it's just incredible. The quality they put into it is unbelievable. Which brings us to the messiest, most ironic, and frankly, saddest part of the whole Zom 100 story: the production. Pay attention to this, because it's hard to believe: the anime that so harshly criticizes labor exploitation was reportedly made by a studio that had its own problems with... you guessed it, labor exploitation. The irony is just staggering. It turns out that Bug Films was founded in 2021 by people who left OLM, the studio behind Komi Can't Communicate, partly because they couldn't handle the work pressure there anymore. They went all out to make the first episode of Zom 100 a masterpiece, but it seems that in doing so, they completely wrecked the production schedule. Everything went to hell, but in slow motion.
As the season progressed, the delays started pouring in. First, they delay an episode for a sporting event, which, okay, that happens. But then, an episode would air in Japan but be delayed on platforms like Netflix. Next, they announce a recap episode mid-season, which, as you know, is always a bad sign. It's the red flag that a studio is at its breaking point. The final blow, the thing that angered us the most, was when they finished episode 9 and then... total silence. The official announcement was that there was no date for the final three episodes. All the hype just hit the floor. They left us hanging for months, MONTHS! It was a real shame because all the momentum, all the excitement, was lost. I had to re-watch parts of the series just to remember where the hell the story had left off before they finally released the ending. It was a classic case of a new studio with brutal talent that bit off more than it could chew. What a bummer, because they ruined what should have been a top-tier premiere.
Y en lo visual, mi gente, uff, la serie es un 10 de 10.. esa onda de la “pintura de paintball” que les decía no fue cosa de un solo capítulo, la animación se mantuvo súper colorida y fluida durante toda la serie, las escenas de acción son una locura, súper dinámicas y divertidísimas de ver. Y pensar que este es el primer gran proyecto de un estudio nuevo, Bug Films… es que es increíble.. le metieron una calidad que ni te la crees… Lo que nos lleva a la parte más cochina, irónica y, la verdad, triste de toda la historia de Zom 100: la producción.. pónganle atención a esto, porque es de no creerse: el anime que le tira tan duro a la explotación laboral, resulta que fue hecho por un estudio que, según los reportes, tuvo sus propios problemas de… sí, adivinaron, explotación laboral, es que no se puede creer la ironía.. resulta que Bug Films lo fundó en 2021 gente que se fue de OLM, el estudio de Komi Can't Communicate, en parte porque ya no aguantaban la presión del trabajo allá, le metieron toda la carne al asador para que el primer capítulo de Zom 100 fuera una obra maestra, pero parece que por hacer eso, se cargaron todo el calendario de producción.. todo se fue al carajo, pero en cámara lenta.
Conforme avanzaba la temporada, los retrasos empezaron a llover, primero, te retrasan un capítulo por un evento deportivo, que bueno, eso pasa, pero luego, un capítulo salía en Japón pero se retrasaba en las plataformas como Netflix.. después, te anuncian un capítulo recopilatorio a mitad de temporada, que ustedes saben, eso siempre es mala señal, es la bandera roja de que un estudio no da más.. el tiro de gracia, lo que más nos dio rabia, fue que terminaron el capítulo 9 y de repente… silencio total. El anuncio oficial fue que no había fecha para los últimos tres capítulos, todo el hype que había se fue al piso.. nos dejaron colgados por meses, ¡meses! Fue una verdadera lástima porque se perdió todo el momentum, toda la emoción.. a mí me tocó volver a ver pedazos de la serie para acordarme en qué carajos se había quedado la historia antes de que por fin sacaran el final, fue el típico caso de un estudio nuevo con un talento brutal, que quiso abarcar demasiado y no pudo.. qué bajón, porque por eso arruinaron lo que debió ser un estreno por todo lo alto.
But despite all that chaos, when I watch the entire series, I can't help but smile. The journey is just too fun. The people who join in, like Shizuka, this super-calculating girl who's terrified of risk, and Beatrix, the incredible German otaku who's a die-hard samurai fan, add a new dynamic that makes everything feel fresh. Seeing these half-broken people, who have nothing to do with each other, finding a strange little family in the middle of the apocalypse and helping each other fulfill their own dreams... it's something that really gets to you.
So, what's the final verdict? Phew, it's complicated. The production issues were a huge pain and definitely detracted from the viewing experience at the time. And I completely understand that the tone isn't for everyone. But the underlying message, how spectacular it looks, and that pure joy, that awesome vibe the story has are too powerful to ignore. For me, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is a solid 8.5 out of 10. It's an incredibly entertaining series with a soul you wouldn't expect. It's not a show you watch for the super-complex story or the drama of who survives. You watch it for that feeling of freedom, for the laughs, and for the reminder that life is meant to be lived to the fullest, not just endured through a gray area. If you're looking for something that makes you laugh and maybe even inspires you to start your own bucket list, I highly recommend it. Just be thankful you can binge-watch it without the horrible waits we had to endure.
Pero a pesar de todo ese desmadre, cuando veo la serie completa, es que no puedo evitar sonreír. Es que el viaje es demasiado divertido. La gente que se va sumando, como Shizuka, esta chica súper calculadora que le tiene pánico al riesgo, y Beatrix, la increíble otaku alemana que es fan a morir de los samuráis, le meten una dinámica nueva que hace que todo se sienta fresco. Ver a esta gente medio rota, que no tiene nada que ver una con la otra, encontrando una pequeña familia toda rara en medio del apocalipsis y ayudándose a cumplir sus propios sueños… es algo que de verdad te llega.
Entonces, ¿cuál es el veredicto final? Uf, está complicado. Los problemas de producción fueron una friega tremenda y definitivamente le pegaron a la experiencia de verla en su momento. Y entiendo perfecto que el tono no es para todos. Pero el mensaje de fondo, lo espectacular que se ve y esa alegría pura, esa vibra tan chingona que tiene la historia son demasiado potentes como para ignorarlos. Para mí, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead es un sólido 8.5 de 10. Es una serie increíblemente entretenida con un alma que no te esperas. No es una serie que ves por la historia súper compleja o por el drama de a ver quién sobrevive. La ves por esa sensación de ser libre, por las risas y por el recordatorio de que la vida está para vivirla con todo, no solo para aguantarla viendo todo en grises. Si andan buscando algo que los haga reír y que chance y hasta los inspire a empezar su propia lista de deseos, se las recomiendo a morir. Eso sí… agradézcanle a la vida que ustedes la pueden maratonear de un jalón sin las esperas horribles que nos tocaron a nosotros.
