¡Hola comunidad del anime y el manga!
Hoy les quiero compartir una ilustración relacionada a las actividades del grupo de Selfshipping con la pareja OC x Canon Ylia y Pete Richardson del anime Daiku Maryu Gaiking.
Para esta actividad, la palabra que nos dieron fue "Fiesta".
Bueno, Gaking no es un anime donde estén mucho en fiestas. Creo que eso se ve un poco más en otros anime de Go Nagai como Mazinger Z y Kotetsu Jeeg.
En Gaiking, la mayoría de las veces vemos a los pilotos distrayéndose comiendo juntos o disfrutando un momento en la playa sin portar uniformes. Así que, ¿porqué no darles un momento diferente?
Y lo primero, fue crear la historia:
Después de una gran batalla donde los héroes de La Tierra tuvieron que demostrar todas sus habilidades y resistencia para evitar que vencieran Las Fuerzas Negras del Terror, el Dr. Diamond decide que es tiempo de celebrar la victoria, aún cuando no es la definitiva.
Para esto, decide dar una fiesta privada en su mansión. La idea es que los jóvenes puedan divertirse un rato lejos de todas las responsabilidades y obligaciones que tienen como pilotos.
Al inicio, Pete no estaba muy entusiasmado con la idea, aún cuando asistió por obligación con su superior. Siendo tan esquivo socialmente, preferió quedarse en una esquina y observar a los demás.
Brando, como siempre, era el alma de la fiesta, haciendo reír a todos con sus ocurrencias. Esta vez, alguien más se le había unido a animar a todos, era Ylia. La joven aprendiz de piloto, con su caracter tan alegre se encargó de hacer que todos se sintieran en ambiente y ¿porqué no? Enseñarles a bailar al estilo de su lugar de origen.
Al ver que Pete no estaba interactuando con los demás, fue decidida hacia donde se encontraba el Capitán y le dijo a sus compañeros: - Hey! ¿Qué les parece si le doy clases de baile al Capitán?
Todos empezaron a animarla a que lo hiciera. Pete, al ver la situación, no pudo evitar reirse mientras le decía a Ylia "- ¿Y porqué supones que yo necesito clases de baile si no me has visto bailar aún?" Ella lo miró, vio a sus compañeros y les dijo: "- Bueno, es momento de demostrarlo, Capitán. Chicos, tómennos una foto. ¡Esto hay que inmortalizarlo!"
Y ya, con el contexto de la situación para hacer la escena, comencé primero a hacer el boceto de los personajes. La idea era que ambos se vieran relajados en medio del evento social: Ylia, alegre y decidida en hacer que Pete se uniera a la diversión y Pete, dejando caer un poco las barreras que siempre lo tienen alejado emocionalmente del resto de sus compañeros.
Para ello, no sólo recurrí a suavizar la expresión de Pete, sino permitir el contacto físico entre ambos personajes: Ylia lo sujeta casualmente por el hombro y Pete apoya la mano en la cintura de la joven mientras la observa. Con esto también queda clara la diferencia de tamaños entre ambos personajes.
Luego, procedí a hacer los detalles. Les coloqué vestimenta formal de fiesta para evitar usar el mismo estilo de trajes que usaban en la serie, muy ajustado a la moda de los 70`s. Así tienen un toque más moderno.
Para los colores, usé paletas de la misma serie aún cuando hay predominancia de tonos oscuros, los cuales sueles ser los más usados por preferencia para eventos nocturnos.
En cuanto a ambientación, no quise hacer algo muy llamativo. Sólo sugerí que están en una especie de balcón, con el cielo estrellado de fondo. Así, la pareja se vuelve el centro de atención de la ilustración, sin que la escenografía se vea descuidada y permita dar algo de contexto del lugar donde se desarrolla la acción. Por último, agregué el efecto de brillos en las lentejuelas del traje de Ylia y las joyas de manera discreta.
Y así quedó la escena con esta pareja:
Te comparto, parte del proceso de elaboración, el cual ya expliqué a grandes rasgos en los párrafos anteriores.
Realizar esta escena fue interesante. Me gusta dibujar personajes masculinos con trajes formales. Este tipo de vestimenta parece sencilla de realizar pero no siempre es así. La caída de la tela en hombros y cómo se ajusta al cuerpo dependiendo de la anatomía del personaje hace que sea todo un reto. Esperemos que el Capitán haya pasado una velada interesante. ¡Se lo merece después de tanto trabajo y esfuerzo!

Today I want to share an illustration related to the Selfshipping group activities featuring the OC x Canon pairing Ylia and Pete Richardson from the anime Daiku Maryu Gaiking.
For this activity, the prompt we were given was "Party."
Well, Gaiking isn’t an anime where characters attend many parties. I think that’s more common in other Go Nagai works like Mazinger Z and Kotetsu Jeeg.
In Gaiking we mostly see the pilots unwinding by eating together or enjoying a day at the beach out of uniform. So, why not give them a different kind of moment?
First, I created the story:
After a big battle where Earth’s heroes had to show all their skills and endurance to prevent the Dark Forces of Terror from winning, Dr. Diamond decides it’s time to celebrate the victory, even if it isn’t final.
He organizes a private party at his mansion. The idea is for the young pilots to have fun for a while, away from the responsibilities and obligations they carry as pilots.
At first, Pete wasn’t very excited about the idea, though he attended out of duty to his superior. Being so socially reserved, he preferred to stay in a corner and observe the others.
Brando, as always, was the life of the party, making everyone laugh with his antics. This time, someone else joined him in livening things up: Ylia. The young trainee pilot, with her cheerful character, made sure everyone felt at ease and even taught them dances from her homeland.
Seeing that Pete wasn’t interacting, she walked over to where the Captain stood and said to her companions: “Hey! What if I give the Captain dance lessons?”
Everyone encouraged her to do it. Pete, seeing the situation, couldn’t help but laugh and said to Ylia, “Why do you assume I need dance lessons if you haven’t seen me dance yet?” She looked at him, glanced at the others and said, “Well, it’s time to prove it, Captain. Guys, take our picture. This must be immortalized!”
With that context to stage the scene, I began by sketching the characters. The idea was to have both look relaxed during the social event: Ylia happy and determined to get Pete to join the fun, and Pete lowering the emotional barriers that usually keep him distant from his comrades.
To achieve this, I not only softened Pete’s expression but allowed physical contact between the two: Ylia casually holds his shoulder and Pete rests a hand on the young woman’s waist while he watches her. This also clarifies the size difference between the characters.
Next, I worked on details. I dressed them in formal party attire to avoid the same 70s‑style uniforms from the series, giving them a more modern touch.
For colors, I used the series’ palette even though darker tones predominate, often preferred for nighttime events.
For the setting, I didn’t want anything too flashy. I suggested they’re on a kind of balcony with a starry sky in the background. This keeps the couple as the focal point while giving some context to the location. Finally, I added subtle sparkle effects on Ylia’s sequin dress and her jewelry.

I’m sharing part of the creation process, which I’ve outlined above.
Making this scene was enjoyable. I like drawing male characters in formal suits. This type of clothing may look simple, but it isn’t always, how the fabric falls on the shoulders and fits the body depending on anatomy is a real challenge. I hope the Captain had an enjoyable evening, he deserves it after so much hard work and effort!
