Good grief, I can’t even remember how long it’s been since I last wrote. But then again, I suppose that’s what happens when you land an ordinary job working 8-hour shifts—it leaves you with no energy to do anything else. So, let’s just say that’s my excuse for not writing.
That said, don’t worry—I have been keeping up with telly, films, and of course, anime. I’ve even picked up a few interesting bits and bobs that I’ll share with you lot soon.
This time, I’d like to start by talking about what I’ve been watching most recently. It struck me that there was a time I was properly obsessed with Fate—I even played the visual novel, though I only finished one route. Funnily enough, it’s the only route Ufotable hasn’t adapted, which is why so many claim it’s “not worth watching”.
Well, who am I to turn down a chance to verify that for myself? So without further ado, let’s chat about my first impressions of Fate/stay night (2006).

Fate/stay night, in case you're not familiar, consists of three main routes which can then branch out depending on how you play. The ones adapted by Ufotable feature Archer as the protagonist and a film series where the main character is the Servant Rider.
As you might notice, there's one missing - the main route, which you need to play first to properly understand all the subsequent events. This is the Saber route, which has only been animated by Studio Deen. Yes, you might recognise it from some rather infamous adaptations they've done over the years. So you might well ask: "With that track record, is it actually worth watching?"
As someone who's played the visual novel, I can tell you yes, it's absolutely worth seeing everything you read brought to life. I'd even go so far as to say the direction makes it properly addictive - each 20-minute episode absolutely flies by, which is quite impressive really.

The only real criticism, if we're being picky, is the animation. While I wouldn't go so far as to call it bad — it's decent enough for what it is — the battle scenes leave rather a lot to be desired. Moments that ought to feel properly epic lose their punch; I'd even say the visual novel's text descriptions manage it better.
Through these first 12 episodes, the story's been remarkably faithful to the Saber route, though I did spot one clear difference from my playthrough. Couldn't tell you whether that's down to different choices I made or just a minor adaptation change, but either way, it doesn't make a huge difference. I've also noticed some elements bleeding in from the Archer route (the beginning's identical, or perhaps my memory's playing tricks).
All told, I've been enjoying this adaptation like an absolute child so far. Blimey, I can only imagine what Ufotable will do with the adaptations of the other routes.

If you fancy giving it a watch, here's the gist of Fate: It follows Emiya Shirou, your "average bloke" (though actually a magus with rather limited abilities), who gets dragged into a Holy Grail War. In this scuffle, each mage must summon a Servant to fight alongside them. The last one standing wins - or whoever manages to touch the Grail first, provided it accepts them.
Now, Emiya Shirou has some properly strong ideals: he wants to be a hero of justice, save as many people as possible, and prevent any deaths - even if it means putting himself in harm's way. What makes the story particularly brilliant is that these Servants are actual historical legends. It's absolutely cracking fun trying to work out who's who when you first watch it!

Comparing to original 2006 series, I think Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (2014) is better.
Have you seen it?

Truth be told, I couldn't say whether it's better or worse – plus I don't reckon you can really compare them as the stories are different. But once I've seen Ufotable's Fate adaptation, I might do a proper write-up with my thoughts.
Different story is exactly why one can compare those shows. Story is everything. If stories were identical, one show would have been completely redundant. Why couldn't you say which one is better, if you like at least one of those shows, and have opinion about it?
How am I meant to say which one's better when I've barely started watching this one? Once I've seen both, I'll give my proper verdict. Besides, most blokes only compare the animation quality anyway - and if we're judging just on that, Ufotable would always come out on top, wouldn't it?
You're going to go crazy when you see Archer's route, when you find out who he is.
I think I've got a rough idea who it might be...

Your analysis of Fate/stay night (2006) is quite interesting and reflects the experience of someone who has played the visual novel. Although this Studio Deen adaptation is often criticized, it's still valuable for those who want to see Saber's story animated.
Something you mention that I find key is the difference in the impact of battles between the animation and the visual novel. It's interesting how, sometimes, a good textual description can convey emotion and intensity better than limited animation.
On the other hand, Fate has the charm of playing with historical heroes in a modern context, which makes it attractive to fans of mythology and history. Do you plan to continue with Ufotable's Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works after finishing this one?
Yes, once I finish this, I'll move on to watching Ufotable's Fate anime - the trilogy of films plus the prequel. Reckon it'll take me a fair while, haha
I was loving the 2006 version (although the latin dub with which I had started seeing it had a terrible sound engineering) but it decayed a little in the, say, last quarter of episodes
