Hello everyone!, Crimson Fox greets you again and I give you my warmest welcome to a new post, this time to make my summary and review of the new and last Evangelion movie, I may not follow the same format that I always use to order everything since I want to follow a more experimental format as it is something more complicated to organize or at least for me, so I apologize in advance if there are any errors in it, I also wanted to make it understandable for those who have seen the movie and for those who haven't, so I omitted several details so that those people who haven't seen it yet can enjoy it without any convenience.
It should also be noted that this is not an analysis, so don't expect me to talk about the thousand and one symbolisms that this film may have. Without further ado, let's get started!
¡Muy buenas a todos!, les saluda nuevamente Crimson Fox y les doy mi más cordial bienvenida a un nuevo post, esta vez para hacer mi resumen y review de la nueva y última película de Evangelion, puede que no siga el mismo formato que siempre utilizo para ordenar todo ya que quiero seguir un formato más experimental al ser algo más complicado de organizar o al menos para mí, así que me disculpo de antemano si hay algún que otro error en el mismo, también quise hacer esto entendible tanto para los que se vieron la película como para los que no, así que omití varios detalles para que aquellas personas que aún no la han visto la puedan disfrutar sin ningún conveniente.
También cabe aclarar que esto no es un análisis, así que no se esperen que hable de los mil y un simbolismos que esta película puede llegar a tener. Ya sin más dilación, empecemos!
Rebuild of Evangelion: 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice upon a time
The feature film starts with a little reminder of what we were shown in the previous 3 films to put us in context, this was a nice touch for those who have been following these films for quite some time (I should mention that the first of these came out in 2007, to give you an idea of how long this tetralogy has been in production).
El largometraje comienza con un pequeño recordatorio de lo que se nos mostró en las anteriores 3 películas para ponernos en contexto, esto fue un buen detalle para los que llevan bastante tiempo siguiendo estas películas (he de mencionar que la primera de estas salió en 2007, para que se hagan una idea del tiempo que lleva esta tetralogía en producción).
Once it ends, a sequence similar to the opening of Rebuild 3.0 occurs, with the forces of Wille and Nerv fighting each other, where we see Mari in action with Eva 08; well as at the beginning of 3.0, we have no context before this battle in the beginning, but what happens at the end of it gives us several things to rescue, such as how the cities are recovered, and Mari's interest in Asuka and Shinji. I don't have a solid opinion about Mari's character, I don't feel her as worked as the rest of the characters and I don't understand her background very well, so it's not so easy for me to empathize or sympathize with her, I'm not saying that she's a bad character, for the moment let's say that I don't "understand" her.
Una vez esta termina ocurre una secuencia similar a la apertura de Rebuild 3.0, con las fuerzas de Wille y Nerv peleando entre sí, donde vemos a Mari en acción junto al Eva 08; bien como al inicio de 3.0 no tenemos contexto previo a esta batalla en un inicio, pero lo que ocurre al final de la misma nos dan varias cosas a rescatar, como la forma en la que se recuperan las ciudades, y el interés de Mari por Asuka y Shinji. No tengo una opinión sólida sobre el personaje de Mari, no la siento tan trabajada como al resto de personaje y no capto muy bien su trasfondo, por lo que no me es tan fácil empatizar ni simpatizar con ella, no digo que sea un mal personaje, de momento digamos que no lo termino de “entender”.
Once the introduction scene ends, we return to where we left off in the previous movie, with the group of Asuka, Rei, and Shinji walking through various paths and cities now devastated and tinged with crimson due to the almost third impact, until they reach a refugee village where we see familiar faces of characters that many of us thought were dead, which could have caused emotion in more than one person; I have to mention that some of these participations I felt a little wasted, but at least they gave us to know what became of them and how is their life after the time skip and intervened in some way or another in the development or action of our protagonist group.
In this village occurs much of the film, time in which we are shown the points of view of these three young people (well, "young", you understand me), on the one hand, we have Shinji, which is deeply affected by the events of 3.0, but gradually thanks to the interactions of the other characters with him, he calms down and accepts that he will not get anything crouching in a corner while crying, as it is something that only comforts him but does not help anyone else, as he says later.
Una vez termina la escena de presentación, regresamos donde nos quedamos en la anterior película, con el grupo de Asuka, Rei, y Shinji caminando por varios senderos y ciudades ahora devastados y teñidos de carmesí producto del casi tercer impacto, hasta que llegan a una aldea de refugiados donde vemos rostros conocidos de personajes que muchos hasta creíamos muertos, lo cual pudo haber causado emoción en más de una persona; he de mencionar que algunas de estas participaciones las sentí un poco desaprovechadas, pero al menos nos dieron a conocer qué fue de ellos y cómo es su vida después del time skip e intervinieron de alguna forma u otra en el desarrollo o accionar de nuestro grupo protagónico.
En esta aldea ocurre gran parte de la película, tiempo en el que nos muestran los puntos de vista de estos tres jóvenes (bueno, “jóvenes”, ustedes me entienden), por un lado tenemos a Shinji, el cual se ve profundamente afectado por los acontecimientos de 3.0, pero poco a poco gracias a las interacciones de los demás personajes con él, éste se va calmando y aceptando que no va a conseguir nada agachándose en una esquina mientras llora, ya que es algo que sólo lo consuela pero no ayuda a nadie más, tal como él mismo dice más adelante.
We also discover a bit about Asuka's feelings, mostly the ones she had kept to herself until now, unloading all this frustration on Shinji, and making him partially come to his senses.
Meanwhile we see how the copy Rei gets along in the village, going through a small process of development, learning, and humanization, time in which some of us could empathize or even get attached to her, so much so that even Shinji himself had already grown a little fond of her, so her departure affected him enough to be the act that would finally make him take determination, and after much crying, be able to get up and move on.
También descubrimos un poco acerca de los sentimientos de Asuka, más que todo los que se había guardado hasta ahora, descargando toda esta frustración en Shinji, y haciéndolo entrar parcialmente en razón.
Mientras tanto vemos cómo la Rei copia se desenvuelve en la aldea, pasando por un pequeño proceso de desarrollo, aprendizaje, y humanización, tiempo en el que algunos pudimos empatizar o hasta encariñarnos con ella, tanto que hasta el mismo Shinji ya le había cogido un poco de cariño, por lo que su partida le afectó lo suficiente como para ser el acto que finalmente le haría tomar determinación, y tras mucho llanto, poder levantarse y seguir adelante.
We then return to the Wille base, where Shinji is taken of his own free will and locked up as he is still considered a dangerous individual; Inside Wunder (the ship) we see several interactions between the crew members, and through a conversation that Ritsuko had with Misato we get more into the thinking of the latter, why she is captain, her feelings, and why she has done everything she has done so far (of course, Evangelion style, because it's not like she tells you directly), in turn, we see a conversation between Fuyutsuki and Gendo in which they talk about the Ayanami series and its purpose.
Nerv starts his move and preparations begin to go to where the final battle will take place, the crew members make a small symbolic tribute, and Asuka and Mai meet again with Shinji in his cell to talk to him, where they clarify their doubts and Asuka is sincere with words and admitting feelings she had or wanted to say in the past as a farewell, relieving a little the burden she was carrying.
Después volvemos a la base de Wille, donde Shinji es llevado por su propia voluntad y es encerrado al seguir siendo considerado como un individuo peligroso; dentro de Wunder (la nave) vemos varias interacciones entre los miembros de la tripulación, y a través de una conversación que tuvo Ritsuko con Misato nos adentramos más en el pensamiento de esta última, del por qué es capitana, de sus sentimientos, y el por qué ha hecho todo lo que ha hecho hasta ahora (claro, a lo Evangelion, porque no es que te lo diga directamente), a su vez vemos una conversación entre Fuyutsuki y Gendo en la que hablan acerca de la serie Ayanami y su propósito.
Nerv empieza su movida y se inician los preparativos para ir hacia donde se disputará la batalla final, los miembros de la tripulación hace n un pequeño homenaje simbólico, y Asuka junto a Mai se reencuentran con Shinji en su celda para hablar con él, donde estos aclaran sus dudas y Asuka se sincera con palabras y admitiendo sentimientos que tuvo o quiso decir en el pasado en forma de despedida, aliviando un poco la carga con la que ella cargaba.
Wille's forces enter the former South Pole, where they are attacked by more and more Nerv forces as they advance, they manage to make their way through the ships and waves of infinite Evas and arrive at NERV headquarters, they try to approach as fast as possible to avoid the activation of Eva 13 while resisting the shots of the enemy ships; the headquarters deploys the unit of Evas series 7, and units 02 and 08 are launched to go against them while they approach the headquarters, managing to pass over them and reaching the target, here Asuka separates from Mari to deactivate Eva 13.
But they didn't count that they were going to have difficulties when it came to deactivate it, so Asuka is forced to show her secret weapon, because she was infected with residues of the ninth angel, which allowed her through the release of a seal, to use the blood of the same to become an angel herself... (ok, I am aware of how crazy this sounds and I will not give much thought to this matter), however, against all odds, they did not count that all this was part of the Gendo plan (Aizen, is that you? ) and unit 13 wakes up, taking "Asuka" out of unit 02 and taking her with them.
Las fuerzas de Wille se adentran en el antiguo Polo Sur, donde cada vez son atacados por más y más fuerzas de Nerv conforme van avanzando, logran hacerse paso entre las naves y las olas de Evas infinitos y llegan al cuartel de NERV, tratan de acercarse lo más rápido posible para evitar la activación del Eva 13 mientras resisten los disparos de las naves enemigas; el cuartel despliega a la unidad de Evas serie 7, y son lanzadas las unidades 02 y 08 para ir en contra de ellos mientras se acercan al cuartel, logrando pasar sobre ellos y llegando al objetivo, aquí Asuka se separa de Mari para desactivar al Eva 13.
Pero no contaban con que iban a tener dificultades a la hora de desactivarlo, así que Asuka se ve en la obligación de mostrar su arma secreta, pues ella quedó infectada con residuos del noveno ángel, lo que le permitía a través de la liberación de un sello, usar la sangre del mismo para ella misma convertirse en un ángel… (ok, soy consciente de lo descabellado que esto suena y no le daré muchas vueltas a este asunto), no obstante, contra todo pronóstico, no contaban con que todo esto fue parte del plan Gendo (Aizen, eres tú?) y la unidad 13 despierta, sacando a “Asuka” de la unidad 02 y llevándosela consigo.
After this, Gendo lands on the deck of the Wumper, talking to Misato and Ritsuko, telling them about his purpose and what is going to happen, while he sacrifices Asuka to make way for the fourth impact and the devastation caused by the infinite Evas spreads all over the world, causing terror to loom over the surviving humans. Gendo takes Unit 01 away causing the crew to be left with nothing to do in the face of such a threat, but a determined Shinji decides to go to where his father is and pilot Unit 01 (: 000), sincere with Misato, and she accepting his determination, permit him, a decision that is not to the liking of some members of the crew, but Misato intervenes (literally) admitting that the responsible for Shinji's actions lies with herself, and is willing to remain responsible for them because she fully trusts the young man, thus leaving Shinji together with Mai with his unit 08 to Gendo's location.
Tras esto Gendo aterriza sobre la cubierta del Wumper, hablando con Misato y Ritsuko, contándoles acerca de su propósito y de lo que va a suceder, mientras sacrifica a Asuka para dar paso al cuarto impacto y la devastación causada por los Evas infinitos se esparce por todo el mundo, haciendo que el terror se cierna sobre los humanos sobrevivientes. Gendo se lleva a la unidad 01 causando que la tripulación quede sin nada que hacer frente a tal amenaza, pero un Shinji determinado decide ir a donde se encuentra su padre y pilotear a la unidad 01 (:000), sincerándose con Misato, y ella aceptando su determinación, le da permiso, decisión que no es del agrado de algunos miembros de la tripulación, pero Misato se interpone (literalmente) admitiendo que la responsable por las acciones de Shinji recae es ella misma, y está dispuesta a seguir siendo responsable por las mismas pues confía plenamente en el joven, partiendo así Shinji junto a Mai con su unidad 08 a la ubicación de Gendo.
Thanks to some random "improvements" Eva 08 can enter the anti-universe (the equivalent of the MCU's quantum world), there Gendo is to execute his plan, so Shinji travels inside Eva 01 and meets Rei, who was waiting for him all that time inside the unit, apologizing and letting Shinji pilot, and here begins the battle between unit 01 and unit 13, father and son, good against evil, the confrontation that will decide the fate of humanity that we have been waiting for so long... Damn, the CGI sucks.
Gracias a unas “mejoras” random el Eva 08 puede entrar en el antiuniverso (el equivalente al mundo quántico del MCU), allí se encuentra Gendo para ejecutar su plan, por lo que Shinji viaja al interior del Eva 01 y se encuentra con Rei, la cual lo estuvo esperando todo ese tiempo en el interior de la unidad, disculpándose y dejando pilotear a Shinji, y aquí comienza la batalla entre la unidad 01 y la unidad 13, padre e hijo, el bien contra el mal, el enfrentamiento que decidirá el destino de la humanidad que tanto hemos esperado… Maldita sea, el CGI es un asco.
Both units confront each other in the anti-universe, entering the Golgotha object, the "origin of everything", where they appear in several Evangelion scenarios, confronting each other and constantly changing places (here the CGI almost gave me a D" seizure: ), stopping as they realize that both Evas being sides of the same coin, they couldn't win a confrontation with force alone, so they start talking, and Gendo explains to Shinji their true goal; meanwhile, the Wunder crew prepares to turn the ship a spear by doing something similar to what Nerv did with the black moon (At this point I'm like the "don't ask, just enjoy it" meme).
Ambas unidades se confrontan en el antiuniverso, entrando en el objeto Gólgota, el “origen de todo”, donde aparecen en varios escenarios de Evangelion, enfrentándose y cambiando constantemente de lugar (aquí el CGI casi me provoca un ataque D”:), deteniéndose al darse cuenta de que al ser ambos Evas caras de una misma moneda, no podrían ganar un enfrentamiento sólo con fuerza, por lo que empiezan a hablar, y Gendo le explica a Shinji su verdadero objetivo; mientras tanto la tripulación del Wunder se prepara para volver la nave una lanza haciendo algo similar a lo que hizo Nerv con la luna negra (A estas alturas estoy como el meme de “no preguntes, sólo gózalo”).
Gendo takes Shinji to the location of the "imaginary Eva" and executes an additional impact to achieve human instrumentalization, and it is here where we move on to a dark, bizarre, and complex sequence, as Evangelion knows how to do; Mari speaks one last time with Fuyutsuki and begins to consume several units with her Eva, the crew evacuates the ship and Misato stays on the ship to ensure activation.
Shinji talks to his father, asking him to stop, and telling him how he feels, confronting him directly, this time without backing down, without fear of his father or himself. Gendo opens up to Shinji and finally tells us his story, what he was like, why Yui was so important to him, and why he was willing to sacrifice so much for her, while Misato gives her all to break through to the imaginary Eva, creating the spear of Gaius (or the spear of Wille) and sacrificing herself in order to get it to Shinji.
Gendo lleva a Shinji a la ubicación del “Eva imaginario” y ejecuta un impacto adicional para lograr la instrumentalización humana, y es aquí donde pasamos a una secuencia tétrica, bizarra, y compleja, como Evangelion sabe hacer; Mari habla por última vez con Fuyutsuki y empieza a consumir a varias unidades con su Eva, la tripulación evacúa la nave y Misato se queda en ella para asegurar la activación.
Shinji habla con su padre, pidiéndole que se detenga, y diciéndole cómo se siente, confrontándolo directamente, esta vez sin echarse para atrás, sin miedo a su padre ni de sí mismo. Gendo se abre con Shinji y por fin nos cuenta su historia, cómo era él, por qué Yui era tan importante para él, y por qué estuvo dispuesto a sacrificar tanto por ella, mientras que Misato da todo de sí para atravesar al Eva imaginario, creando la lanza de Gaius (o la lanza de Wille) y sacrificándose para poder hacérsela llegar a Shinji.
Returning to the father and son conversation, a mollified Gendo laments a bit about this turn of events (It's the maneuver kills Aizens), and reflects on his son, admitting that he made the sacrifice of abandoning him to fulfill his wish, as he felt that moving away was the best thing for the little boy, wondering what would have happened if he had taken him in from the beginning, accepting him, and realizing that had he done this earlier, he would have already fulfilled his wish, for a part of his wife, Yui, lived in the son he had ignored and used all this time, walking away crestfallen, aware of the mistake he has made.
Volviendo a la conversación padre e hijo, un apaciguado Gendo se lamenta un poco por este giro en los acontecimientos (Es la maniobra mata Aizens), y reflexiona acerca de su hijo, admitiendo que hizo el sacrificio de abandonarlo para cumplir con su deseo, ya que consideraba que alejarse era lo mejor para el pequeño, preguntándose qué hubiera pasado si lo hubiera acogido desde un inicio, aceptándolo, y dándose cuenta de que de haber hecho esto antes, ya hubiera cumplido su deseo, pues una parte de su esposa, Yui, vivía en el hijo que había ignorado y utilizado todo este tiempo, alejándose cabizbajo, consciente del error que ha cometido.
After this, we are shown some characters in a very small process of introspection like in the last chapters of Neon genesis, like Shinji showing the development and maturity he acquired by the recent events, Kaworu understanding Shinji's true feelings and understanding her own, Asuka's past (which I don't see much purpose to it) and her thoughts that are a bit similar to Neon genesis, and being released.
Después de esto nos muestran a algunos personajes en un muy pequeño proceso de introspección como en los últimos capítulos de Neon génesis, como Shinji demostrando el desarrollo y madurez que adquirió por los eventos recientes, Kaworu entendiendo los verdaderos sentimientos de Shinji y comprendiendo los suyos, el pasado de ésta Asuka (al cual no le veo mucho propósito) y sus pensamientos que son un poco similares a la de Neon génesis, y siendo liberada.
It is also confirmed once and for all thanks to Kaworu and Shinji that rebuild is indeed a sequel to Neon genesis and in fact everything has been a cycle that has been repeated over and over again, and Shinji decides to end this cycle by creating a new genesis (literally) in which the Evas do not exist, but just when he was going to sacrifice himself to achieve it, the spirit of Eva 01 (Yui) ejects him to let him live, and Gendo, controlling Eva 13, fulfills his wish to say goodbye to Yui, by giving his life, taking Shinji's place and fulfilling his wish, putting an end to human instrumentalization, ending the Evas, and opening the way to a new future, where Shinji and Mari meet again, and many years later, we can see them together, living in a peaceful world, being happy, and thus closing the curtain of this story.
También se nos confirma de una vez por todas gracias a Kaworu y Shinji que rebuild sí es una secuela de Neon génesis y de hecho todo ha sido un ciclo que se ha repetido una y otra vez, y Shinji decide acabar con este ciclo creando un nuevo génesis (literalmente) en el que no existan los Evas, pero justo cuando se iba a sacrificar para lograrlo, el espíritu del Eva 01 (Yui) lo eyecta para dejarlo vivir, y Gendo controlando al Eva 13, cumple su deseo de despedirse de Yui, al dar su vida tomando ambos el lugar de Shinji y cumpliendo su deseo, dando fin a la instrumentalización humana, dando fin a los Evas, y abriendo paso a un nuevo futuro, donde Shinji y Mari se reencuentran, y muchos años después, podemos verlos juntos, viviendo en un mundo pacífico, siendo felices, y de esta manera poder cerrar el telón de esta historia.
In the technical sections I don't have much to say apart from the animation, which mostly by itself was not bad, but the abuse of CGI as you may have noticed from my comments, was not to my liking, it is understandable in many scenes as they give a more... "mechanical"(? ), which in turn allows giving the scenes with the mechas a very distinctive touch that added to the effects could have been a little difficult to achieve or execute in the same way with traditional animation (I'm not saying it could be bad, but it is a different touch), taking, for example, the scene where units 02 and 08 faces the swarm of Evas series that prevented them from passing, in that type of scene I saw it acceptable and even enjoyable... But from there to use it frequently in scenes where it is not necessary at all and only makes it look clumsy or directly uncomfortable and unpleasant to the eye, in my opinion, it was quite bad.
En los apartados técnicos no tengo mucho que decir aparte de la animación, que mayormente por sí misma no estuvo mal, pero el abuso del CGI como habrán podido notar por mis comentarios, no fue de mi agrado, es entendible en muchas escenas ya que le dan un aire más… “mecánico”(?), lo que a su vez permite darle a las escenas con los mechas un toque bastante distintivo que sumado a los efectos pudo haber sido un poco difícil de lograr o ejecutar del mismo modo con animación tradicional (no digo que pueda quedar mal, pero es un toque diferente), tomando por ejemplo la escena las unidades 02 y la 08 se enfrentan al enjambre de Evas series que les impedían el paso, en ese tipo de escena sí lo veía aceptable y hasta disfrutable… Pero de ahí a que lo usen frecuentemente en escenas en las que no es para nada necesario y sólo lo hace ver tosco o directamente incómodo y desagradable a la vista, en mi opinión quedó bastante mal.
Besides that, the soundtrack is a beauty as it's to be expected coming from Evangelion; the direction was... Peculiar, how several scenes were made were very good, and the detail of the introspection in sketch format at the end was not liked by many, but I liked it, and there was a little of everything you might think knowing that the director is Hideaki Anno, but from there to what would be the forced implementation of CGI in several scenes, the curious approaches in certain parts (you know what I'm talking about) often feel out of place, and that so many things and ideas were taken out of nowhere and some that you don't even understand the reason for them, are things that can greatly affect the value that each one gives to this feature film.
Además de eso, la banda sonora es una belleza como es de esperarse viniendo de Evangelion; la dirección fue… Peculiar, la forma en la que se hicieron varias escenas quedaron muy bien, y el detalle de la introspección en formato sketch del final no fue del agrado de muchos, pero a mí en lo personal me gustó, y hubo un poco de todo lo que uno podría pensar al saber que el director es Hideaki Anno, pero de ahí a lo que vendría siendo la implementación forzosa del CGI en varias escena, los curiosos enfoques en ciertas partes (ya saben de qué hablo) se sienten muchas veces sacados de lugar, y que se sacaran tantas cosas e ideas de la nada y algunas que ni se entiende la razón de las mismas, son cosas que pueden afectar mucho al valor que cada uno le dé a este largometraje.
I liked this movie, mostly because of the emotional charge it has, because yes, this movie makes mistakes, and quite a few in fact, but beyond that, the closure that was given seems to be quite accurate, well-executed, and appropriate, which is very difficult since this is the culmination of a story that takes almost 26 years of history, and that is something that very few products can say.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of my favorite anime, and few franchises have made me spend so much time theorizing and looking for videos on youtube about things I did not understand, and that it has had this closure is not that makes me very happy, but it does make me feel very satisfied, I will always remember the good and bad moments that this franchise gave me, and especially the difference it made in me as a person. I can only thank you for everything, and say goodbye, Evangelion.
Esta película me gustó, más que todo por la carga emotiva que esta posee, porque sí, esta película comete errores, y bastantes de hecho, pero más allá de eso, el cierre que se le dio me parece bastante acertado, bien ejecutado, y apropiado, lo cual es muy difícil ya que esta es la culminación de una historia que lleva casi 26 años de historia, y eso es algo que muy pocos productos pueden decir.
Neon Genesis Evangelion es uno de mis animes favoritos, y son pocas las franquicias que me han hecho pasar tanto tiempo teorizando y buscar videos en youtube acerca de cosas que no entendía, y que haya tenido este cierre no es que me haga muy feliz, pero sí me hace sentir muy satisfecho, siempre recordaré los buenos y malos momentos que me brindó esta franquicia, y sobre todo la diferencia que hizo en mí como persona. No me queda más que agradecer todo, y decir Adiós, Evangelion.
