Itadori's role as a sort of "weaker" protagonist in Jujutsu Kaisen is actually a really refreshing take in the shonen genre, where many protagonists are often framed as immediately powerful ( like in mob psycho or one punch man) or destined to face off against equally powerful foes. In most typical shonen anime, like Naruto, the protagonist often starts off weak but gradually becomes strong enough to face off against major antagonists. However, in Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuji’s strength is still far from that of the primary antagonist, Sukuna, which shifts the narrative focus in a unique way, as jujustu users do not have the opportunity to even develop new powers.
Yuji being weaker than Sukuna creates a lot of tension and drama because it's clear that Sukuna is an overwhelming force that Yuji cannot match without help, While Yuji is physically strong compared to most, he’s not necessarily a “chosen one” who can easily overpower much stronger enemies he’s someone who relies on his friends, strategy, and sometimes even sheer willpower to keep him going, which is a different kind of strength. Overall, Yuji being weaker than the main Antagonist Sukuna flips the script on traditional shonen tropes and allows Jujutsu Kaisen to explore different themes and character arcs. It adds a level of depth and stakes that we don’t often see in other series as i have seen jjk fans questioning if Yuji is even the main protagonist, which is why I think it stands out.
