Welcome to Pokemon Type Swap!
In this series i will be taking classic pokemon and changing their type — creating a new, fresh look. I am going to start with the original 3 starter pokemon: Bulbasaur, Charmander & Squirtle. From there i’m not sure which route i will take.
Todays pokemon is Squirtle, i have chosen to draw it as a Fire type. This is my favourite one yet!
Orginial Sketches
I decided to remove Squirtle’s shell and attempted to put a flame tail on him. None of the tails looked like they fit, i looked back at Squirtle’s original tail and took inspiration from it to make one that looked a bit like smoke.
I felt like I needed to add the shell back in else it wouldn’t be a turtle pokmon, and it looked much better. I then added little spikes to his shell to give him a slightly more firece look through triangle shape theory. I felt this helped make it fit in with the Fire type more.
Outline & Colour
I drew the outline and blocked in the colours i had chosen. The colours fit straight away and i didnt need to play around with them.
Shadows & Background
Next i added shadows to give it some dimension then added a background. I added a few cliffs/mountains and a lava river to help set the scene.
