~ Finito ~
So, i finally did a thing for myself. I've been so busy curating the Splinterlands weekly art contests, the Alien Art Hive Community, and the Photography Lovers Community daily that i don't get time to post much for myself. The last couple of posts that i have made for myself were actually oriented in helping the community. Mostly, to help the learning curve for newer users.
I'm not complaining at all... but i am excited to finally get back to doing some things for my own sake. I made a post describing this artwork in it's inception which you can read here! You don't really need to check that one out if you haven't already since i will recap a bit.
I finally finished the art though and i am glad to present you with my 'Flying Squirrel.' The only reason it's flying is that it's riding a giant flying butterfly.
I really enjoyed creating this artwork. I originally did a minimal and very light pencil sketch. Then inked that pencil sketch with some micron pens. After that i erased the pencil and began to color with Prismacolor colored pencils. I didn't really find a brown that i wanted so i had to mix and match and blend quite a bit.
I did this artwork on some high-quality printer paper but i can tell the paper is high quality for ink printer printing but not for layering wax-based colored pencils. There are some subtle differences from one image to another... some less subtle than others. As i finished one stage of the progress of the art i would scan it. So, all of the images seen in this post are scans.
I tried to get a realistic look to the squirrel. I think it was successful in that regard overall. Though if i could go back and start over i can tell i would have done a few things differently. My lady likes squirrels and butterflies... so i was inspired to create an artwork that would marry those two things together but in an unconventional manner. I had a mental image of a squirrel riding a giant butterfly using the antennas as the reigns.
~ Furry Friends ~
I was also inspired by a friend i made last year. I have a post about My Little Buddy from last April where i was having a squirrel come eat peanuts out of my hand. We bonded a lot last Spring and Summer. I was even able to get a video which you can see in that post. Kind of made me actually feel like Bob Ross a little bit.
Bob Ross & Friend
Well, this little buddy use to come to my back patio almost daily for some peanuts. We ended up having quite a tight little bond... even if it was just so it could score some peanuts. It would often gnaw on my fingers from time to time reaching for the peanuts. However, it was always quite delicate and gentle even then. I will never forget the experiences i shared with my little buddy.
So, this artwork kind of commemorates those experiences for me and immortalizes the character as well. Each successive image just shows more progress during the creative process. I probably should have done like 20 more scans to show each actual progression but i think y'all will be content with what is presented here.
A majority of these images were shared in the last post already. But i didn't feel like it would do the finished art justice to only show a few of the updated images without all of the build-up to get there.
~ The Sky Is The Limit ~
When it comes to using your imagination and creativity the Sky Is The Limit. In this sky, i wanted to have a flying squirrel because it's riding a giant butterfly. That's the beauty of art... whatever you can imagine, you can create. Color also is something that can boost the unlimited potential to actualize fantasy and dream.

So, i finally got back on the job and finished this piece of art. I could probably continue to work on it and perfect it... but there is also a high probability of overworking it and corrupting the image.
I guess this is one of those times where less if more and you have to know when to call it quits. Overall, i am pretty happy with the finished work though it is not without it's flaws.
So, that's it. It's finally finished. I decided to mint this bad boy and sell it as an NFT at the NFT ShowRoom. I made the first edition available for auction here. I priced the first 3 editions a little higher than the rest but i made 11 total NFTs. They are all quite affordable but i wanted to tier the pricing from the first edition down. So, you can scoop one up for 7 swap.Hive at the lowest or buy one of the top 3 editions for 15. Not too bad considering how many hours i put into it. You also get the super High-Resolution file as the unlockable bonus after purchase.
My NFT ShowRoom Gallery
I forgot one of the things i spent a bit of time on that wraps it all up... the process gif. So, i edited the post to include this... My Bad!
Thank you for taking the time to stop by and appreciate the art. I hope you enjoyed the beauty and that this post has added some value to you. If anything, i hoped it gave you a smile or sparked your own creative thoughts. Take Care and feel free to let me know your thoughts in the comments.
Thanks Again For Being Here Now
Hello Castleberry, apparently all is well with you and your creativity too! This meeting with this wild animal is very interesting, you have created a bond of trust. The animal sensed if he approached you that he could trust you and that his life was not in danger. It is rare to meet wild animals that accept this promiscuity. I have a female blackbird (local bird) who comes to visit me every day, she scratches the ground looking for food. I help her by adding cereal to the soil. I also pay attention to the cats that prowl so that she does not help herself to meals.
The more the day passes, the less she is afraid and approaches less than a meter from me to eat without being suspicious of my presence. For the moment she hasn't decided to eat from my hand, I haven't had the chance you had.
I really like your creation, especially the idea of the squirrel riding a butterfly to conquer new horizons. His gaze is positive and without malice. His little acrobatic animals have always fascinated me. They are discreet and it is difficult to see them if they have not taken up residence near their home. I also like the representation of the antennae of the butterfly which serves as its rudder. He looks good and ready to explore the magical art world of Castleberry. Thank you for your creation.
I would like to be able to reproduce what I imagine but the dexterity of my hands does not allow it for the moment I do not have your experience. I'm on a project to melt metal and cast lost wax bronze. I have copper and tin in my workshop. A few years ago, I had fun pouring beeswax candles into silicone molds, the wax I had bought from a beekeeper. I don't have a post to submit to you on this subject but I will do one when I receive the material to melt the metal. My difficulty will be to produce the representation to be molded.
You devote a lot of your time to the hive and treat yourself more often and given your creativity you should create a lot more of it for us to benefit from your work. Thanks again see you soon my friend!
I really appreciate your kind words and extremely thoughtful response. I really like the way you detailed what about this work spoke to you. Thanks for appreciating the details and for the encouragement to create and share more often! I do appreciate that very much my friend.
It was also cool to hear about your blackbird experience. I am sure at the rate you are going... you will be able to get her eating out of your hand in no time. I just recently found that you can use dry oatmeal to soak up bacon grease (instead of throwing it out) and then toss the oatmeal out for the birds. I thought that was such a clever way to use the oats and give the birds something extra! Thanks for keeping an eye out for the cats too. I have had to run off a cat or two and even a hawk a couple of times. hahhah
I love bees also. It would be cool to raise a colony or two. I think your shop sounds awesome and i bet working with metal and wax is extremely challenging. I hope your creations go well and that you can document it with your amazing photography for a super cool post.
Thanks again for stopping by and appreciating my art and for taking the time to comment in such a meaningful way.
I like what you do and I like who you are as well. Before being on hive I was taking pictures without even really realizing what I was producing. I made them and stored them in a hard drive and that's all I was done. Some photo forgotten for more than 7 years. But your encouragement to produce forced me to go back to my hard drives and take all the photos I had taken and realize that some photos were very interesting. You allowed me to open my eyes to a part of me that is creativity. I confess that I thought I had no artistic taste but in fact no. In fact, it's me who has to thank you!
Merci beaucoup
If there is a shmoopy, then I love it! I recently became a fan of squirrels after watching this guy on youtube who turned one of his rooms into a squirrel house. He calls them shmoopys. Love the inspiration behind your work but man those details look so good! I'd have been exhausted in no time! Solid work!
Wow. Thanks for the kind words and appreciation for the art. I have come to really enjoy the squirrels ever since i was able to convince the one to come eat out of my hand. You can see it in one of those links up there if you want to check out that post.
I doubt they would come chill in a Shmoopy if i made one. We have a few aggressive birds that permit the squirrels to come for a while but they will let the squirrels know when they've worn out their welcome. hahaha
Also, i thought you might like checking this out...
Thanks for stopping by!
I have seen squirrels during the spring but before I can even think about getting close to them they flee away so quickly! Someday I'll pet one...someday! And it will not involve this "SAW" level of a maze hahaha! Thanks for the video! Fantastic Guss was my favorite. What a derp! This channel is golden!
Yeah, i laughed my ass off the first time i saw that. There was a part two i think as well. Yes, if you have some peanuts in the shell then you can throw them out towards the little dudes. Eventually, they will associate you with the peanuts and you can throw it closer and closer until eventually you can make them come and get it. But, you have to be very still and patient. That's how i got my buddy to come over. It took weeks. But, at one point he/she would come get one out of my hand... take two steps away and then lay on it's stomach looking at me while it munched down. hahaha It was super cool.
Yes it is called Backyard Maze 2.0 and I automatically watched it. Now I am in a wormhole in this guy's channel. He has some amazing work! He is a lesser chaotic version of Michael Reevers.
I am going to try that when spring comes around. I mostly see them in Gorky Park, which is both a public park and houses a lot of squirrels. I think it will be harder since there is always a crowd there. But if I do get one and it lays on its stomach and looks at me, I'll call it a win haha!
Hahaha... yes, looks like i'm going to have to check out more of that dude's content. Park squirrels are usually less afraid of people than usual. So, perhaps you can get some winning in soon! Cheers =)
Great piece of art mate!
I am sure the future at NFT business is bright for you!
Have a good one!

Wow, Thanks for the tip and kind words Andy. Glad you stopped by and liked the artwork. Hopefully, a few of those NFTs will find their way into some loving hands! hahaha Cheers bro!
Sweet, nice to start the week with something light. Not light as easy - more like not to serious but fun! Even though you apparently put quite some work into it. Have a good week!
I know what you mean. A lot of my art is on the darker side... so it was nice to make something a bit more light and uplifting. I did put a lot of work into this one. I think it would have gone faster on better paper... but slow and steady won this race! You have a great week as well. I appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to comment. Your comment brightened my day!
Great job man, you used the colors very well, the work is cheerful and lively, lively like the nice protagonist. On a technical level, I really like the squirrel fur effect. Congratulations.
I am glad you took the time to comment here. I did try to make this one a bit more light-hearted than my usual stuff. The fur effect took a lot of layers... and unfortunately, they don't stack up well on this paper. So, i think it worked out pretty well regardless. I appreciate you brother! Cheers
HOLY BAGUMBA WOW! Just wow bro it's sooooo beautiful! I read it form top to bottom. I am really bad at following instructions although you already said not to check the link because you could recap it here, but I did bro hahaha. So, did you figured it out if it's a male or female? We will call it Ulysses hahaha! Bob Ross made you proud bro.
Thanks Browski! It wasn't really an instruction... i just didn't want anyone to feel the content was redundant. Thanks for checking out all my stuff and for your kind words. I never really did find out if it was a boy or girl. Hahaha
Thanks for the Bob Ross love my friend. Take care and cheers! =) Since it's Sunday Night here...
Oh I see hahaha glad to finally see the finish artwork you have here bro. Well let's call it Peanut then for sure! hahaha just having fun with names, anyway boy or girl doesn't matter, it's part of the family.
Hahaha well check who's this! Peace bro have a great Sunday Night! o//
We can call her Steve... hahahhaa
Daaammmnn bro.. her then Steve Thaaat's nuts hahaha alright approved
Some next level stuff right there brother, amazing work. 🥃♥️
Thanks! I appreciate your kind words. Thank you for taking the time to come and check it out and comment! Cheers
Don't mention it, cheers brother. 🥃
Very nice work my friend. It shows that you dedicated your due time to each color stroke in the squirrel and the butterfly. I like the color of the wings very much; purple and blue are my favorite colors. Your furry friend has been immortalized.
Wow, thanks bro! I really appreciate you taking the time to stop by and appreciate my art and for taking the time to comment. I did want every stroke to matter... and it looks good... but deep down inside, i know it could be better. Purple and blue always make a great combo! hahaha
My little buddy will ride on in my mind and also be immortalized on the blockchain forever! Cheers bro!
Don't worry bro. It's a great job, I really appreciate traditional drawing and this one is very well done. I also have that thought a lot, feeling that I can do better. But that's good because it drives you to improve every day and learn new things. Cheers bro! ✌️
Always looking to improve and do better! That's what makes art so fun. The best is always yet to come! Thanks again buddy.
Nice design; and love the shiny colors in the finished piece.
My dogs love squirrels; I put on squirrel TV for them when I leave, lol!
Hey, thanks! That means a lot coming from you. I like how the colors shine too when it's all finished. That rarely ever digitally translates. So, sometimes i will take some creative photography angles to try and show it a little.
That's cool that your dogs love squirrels and it's nice of you to leave it on the TV for them when your gone! hahahha Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment! I appreciate you. =)
Sounds like an immense amount of work went into this. well done
It definitely was some work... but overall, it wasn't too bad. Thanks for your kind words and appreciation. Take Care
I was going to say that squirrels are so cute, until further down I saw the video!!!!🤣 What a way to laugh!😅🤣 I really enjoyed the art, and I guess your wife must be very happy with the result jjj.
Glad you got a laugh out of the deal and thanks for checking out the video. I am so happy to hear you enjoyed the art and i think she was happy that i finally finished! hahaha =) Thanks for taking the time to come and see and comment! Cheers
I love this @castleberry the colour and the subject matter.
I have a love hate with squirrels. The damage they've done to things round here, they get into walls and sneak into sail lofts in the boat house and shred old letters from long dead ancestors or nibble up my not very well stored art supplies (reminding me that casein IS a diary prodcut of sorts)
But, I also sort of love their cheeky ways. We have one around here who comes to our day and demands food. It makes no sense chasing him off, he just looks at us as if WE'RE mad and so you give him break or some chicken feed , but I also give him the 'eye' too when he heads to the bird feeder.
yes Squirrels, probably so like humans that we care to believe. Really wonderful.
I am glad you liked the art and the subject. The squirrel we had that was in the video of me feeding it... eventually, ended up eating a large hole in one of the patio chairs. It was coming and taking the stuffing out of the chair for a nest i presume.
They have also shredded the patio ground cover fabric for the same purposes. They are very lovable yet very destructive. So, i do understand what you mean. It's probably best they don't navigate the skies from the backs of giant butterflies or else there would be no bird feeder safe. hahaha
Cheers
What a cute little buddy!! Nice colors.
And don't think I don't see what you did with that butterfly's face.
Thanks for stopping by and taking time to appreciate the beauty. Glad you enjoyed the colors. I'm curious to know what you see that i did with the butterfly's face!??! hahaha
LOL.
Nothing.
Nothing at all.
I had a feeling you weren't going to say.
I'm pretty sure i know what you are talking about.... 😜
😆You DO have a reputation, now, Bob O'Keefe. At least amongst those paying attention to details.
Nothing wrong with 'Enlarged Flowers'... what else is a giant Butterfly gonna eat?!
Better than beating a dead horse.
I think we know what's on his mind.
Great arts and I wish you the best in NFT boss
We shall see on the NFT part. Thanks for the encouragement and kind words. Cheers

Hello. Dear friend, how can I participate in photography competitions? And how?
We haven't had a competition in quite a while but when we do have one you can see the post made by the Community Account for details on how to participate.
We come out with a community curation post a few times a week featuring selections of posts that the Community Curators pick daily. You have had your photography featured quite a few times recently. So, just keep up the great work.
