When I wanted to integrate the Zentangle technique with the creation of a mandala, it wasn't the first time I had done so. I feel that it is my way of combining two methods that share the same intention: relaxation, calm, focus, and connection with myself through my doodles.
Although they come from different contexts, both coincide in something essential, which is that they allow the mind to relax while the body creates. Personally, I love this. Combining them enhances the creative experience, resulting in visually appealing and emotionally meaningful works. In this case, they represent one of the Splinterlands characters.
I realized that I have been doodling Splinterlands cards for over two years. I have many sketchbooks full of doodles, including some mandalas. I could say that I have a large collection.
Zentangle, in itself, is a technique based on repetitive strokes called tangles, which are organized within defined spaces. Its magic lies in the fact that it does not require any prior skills, does not seek perfection, and does not pursue a specific result. It is a meditative process where the important thing is to draw line by line, connecting the breath with the movement.
A mandala, on the other hand, has a circular structure that symbolizes unity and balance. It is constructed from the center outwards, respecting patterns in each strip of the circle. When we combine both, we obtain a stable format, the circle of the mandala within which we can integrate the lines of the Zentangle.
The first step in merging these techniques is to define the circle that will serve as the base. In this case, it will be a part of this circle to cover the small size of the worksheet in my sketchbook.
You can draw the circle with a compass; I did it freehand. The important thing is that the shape delimits the workspace. I think the aim of this is to organize the spaces so that the doodles can then be fitted in.
We don't need many details at the beginning, just a soft guide, in this case a black dot, which will then allow us to locate the tangles.
Once the basic structure is marked, we begin what many consider the most rewarding part: filling each segment with Zentangle patterns.
We can use classic strokes, such as parallel lines, spirals, dots, leaves, waves, diamonds, or S-shaped curves. Or you can invent your own tangles. In this case, I used the runes of the majestic bird.
I confess that this card is my favorite. I have made many fan art pieces inspired by this design.
Each section of the mandala can have a different pattern, creating contrast and visual variety. It is also valid to repeat certain designs to generate harmony. There are no rigid rules here: the combination depends on your intuition and how the drawing flows at that moment.
On an emotional level, this integration of techniques works like active meditation. The mandala offers you order and security, while Zentangle invites improvisation and freedom.
From an artistic point of view, the combination is powerful. Mandalas tend to be symmetrical, but Zentangle gently breaks that order with unique designs in each part. This creates a balance between the uniform and the unexpected. You can play with contrasting textures, alternating dense patterns with more open spaces. You can even add pencil shading to give volume and depth, making each section stand out in a delicate way.

Saludos amigos amantes de las artes manuales! les doy la bienvenida una vez más a mi Taller @bricolajedc . En esta oportunidad me encantaría compartir con ustedes el proceso creativo de uno de mis garabatos inspirado en una carta de Splinterlands Aves Sturgis. Acompáñenme y les muestro.
Cuando quise integrar la técnica del Zentangle con la creación de un mandala, no es la primera vez que lo hago, siento que es mi forma de unir dos métodos que comparten una misma intención: la relajación, la calma, el enfoque y la conexión conmigo misma a través de mis garabatos.
Aunque provienen de contextos distintos, ambos coinciden en algo esencial, y es que permiten que la mente se relaje mientras el cuerpo crea, personalmente amo esto. Al combinarlos, se potencia la experiencia creativa, dando lugar a obras visualmente atractivas y emocionalmente significativas. En este caso representan uno de los personajes de Splinterlands.

El Zentangle, por sí mismo, es una técnica basada en trazos repetitivos llamados Tangles, que se organizan dentro de espacios definidos. Cuando combinamos ambas cosas, obtenemos un formato estable, el círculo del mandala dentro del cual podemos integrar los trazos del Zentangle.
El primer paso para fusionar estas técnicas es definir el círculo que servirá como base. En este caso será una parte de este círculo para abarcar el tamaño pequeño de la hoja de trabajo de mi cuaderno de dibujo.
Se puede dibujar el círculo con un compás, yo lo hice a mano alzada. Lo importante es que la forma delimite el espacio de trabajo. Creo que lo que se busca con eso es ordenar los espacios para luego encajar los garabatos.
No necesitamos muchos detalles al principio, solo una guía suave, en este caso un punto de color negro, que luego permitirá ubicar los tangles.
Una vez marcada la estructura básica, comenzamos lo que muchos consideran la parte más gratificante: llenar cada segmento con patrones propios del Zentangle.
Puedemos usar trazos clásicos, como líneas paralelas, espirales, puntos, hojas, olas, rombos o curvas en forma de “S”. O se puedes inventar tangles propios, en este caso utilicé las runas del Ave majestuosa.
Confieso que esta carta es mi favorita. He hecho muchos fan art inspirados en este diseño.
Cada sección del mandala puede llevar un patrón distinto, creando contraste y variedad visual. También es válido repetir ciertos diseños para generar armonía. Aquí no existen reglas rígidas: la combinación depende de tu intuición y de cómo fluya el dibujo en ese momento.
A nivel emocional, esta integración de técnicas funciona como una meditación activa. El mandala te ofrece orden y seguridad, mientras que el Zentangle te invita a la improvisación y a la libertad.
Desde el punto de vista artístico, la combinación es poderosa. Los mandalas suelen tener simetría, pero el Zentangle rompe suavemente ese orden con diseños únicos en cada parte. Esto crea un equilibrio entre lo uniforme y lo inesperado. Puedes jugar con el contraste de texturas, alternando patrones densos con espacios más abiertos. Incluso puedes añadir sombras con lápiz para dar volumen y profundidad, haciendo que cada sección destaque de manera delicada.
