This is Halomoth. One of the character prompts for Charactober. This is the first character that I am designing for this month long drawing activity. I think this prompt has been very inspiring for me and I like it. Halomoth was described to have wings that looks like that of a stained glass window that is my main design idea here. I created a huge moth character with big eyes and big antennae. It is walking in the forest stepping on the mushroom and pumpkin forest floor.
I started working on it before lunch and set it aside for some offline tasks and came back to it early this evening to finish it. Here are some process photos.
I always begin with a black background then cover it with lighter colors could be random colors or any color I like then the scratching part. Here I already have a clear idea that I am making a giant moth like creature in the forest.
I just continue scraping off the colors to form the images like flowers and leaves, mushrooms and trees and others.
When I came back to continue I added the pumpkin and autumn leaves on the forest floor.
For the last edit when the all the details are in place, I started scratching off some more of the details that I added to prevent it from looking busy. The moth is blending with the surroundings so I removed all those noise around it like some clouds and some flowers. I also minimized the leaves on the forest floor. When I am happy with the result I did a color adjustment to make the image pop even more.
Scratch art involves scratching away a surface of colors to form a desired image with a dark background. I love experimenting with various colors and textures and it's a remarkably calming and therapeutic activity.
I do not follow a line drawing or a rough sketch I just scratch as I go. I am sure you might like it too so go ahead and try it. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a comment below.
