How to Deal With an Invasive Species If You Have a Planet to Burn

As we are learning of what in their ecology the Uppaaimar saved alive, we are also learning what they destroyed.

Ghoulian Hook-Weevils figure in a number of ancient records near the Uppaaimar homeworld. They were invasive, traveling from world to world and eating up whatever they wanted from generation to generation.

They planned their assaults, and one fine year set their eyes on the Uppaaimar homeworld, which that year was planting bumper crops of things they enjoyed eating – clearing large tracts of land to grow said crops.

The world of the double Uppaai (“stars,” in the regional parlance to this day) was being made into a paradise, and that was the word on all the planets otherwise afflicted the year before … or rather, the scent, because the Hook-Weevils really didn't talk. They followed the smell of the food and the soil that it came from to pick the ships to lay their eggs on and thus return to the source of the food.

The Hook-Weevils all laid their eggs on ships going to that paradise for them – ALL OF THEM.

In the second half of the year, the second of the two Uppaai – the system's second sun – finally joined its companion in entering the Wolf-Rayet state, massively shedding its layers.

The Ghoulian Hook-Weevils were eradicated from the galaxy that year, unable to survive what the Uppaaimar themselves had fled.

This was the service the Uppaaimar civilization did for their neighbors and the galaxy as a whole in departing their homeworld.

“The Creator does all things in His perfect time: the Hook-Weevils were growing to the point that they were threatening the food supplies of many worlds. In our passing from our home, we take away the scourge of the region. There shall be no more famines among our neighbors. We accept the change of our second Uppaai and the loss of our world, so that a hundred worlds, many of whom shall receive our refugees, shall live and eat in peace by the same power of our changed second Uppaai. It is acceptable, and a great consolation.”

This explained why the Uppaaimar had been received so gladly by their near neighbors and had been integrated in so quickly … they may have thought of themselves as refugees, but in the region around them, they were heroes.

These fractal horrors popped up in Apophysis 2.09, and I was glad to have the Uppaaimar take care of them for us!
