Scanner art experiments

I have a wireless printer, it's basically the worst printer in the world and think I have ranted about it here before. To use it you have to connect with an app and basically never wants to connect, refuses to just print in black and white, is constantly "out of ink" then prints me pages and pages of instructions, I think you get the point.

We were considering just throwing it out because it's so enraging but I remembered it had a scanning option which I had never tried.

I decided to get it out to give it a go and while it was still very annoying, once I started scanning it worked great!

I grabbed some stuff from around the house like newspapers and fliers and tested with good results. Then I tried pulling the paper through and wiggling it around to get some fun wavy effects.

I also scanned my hand:

here are more paper scans with some wiggling...

I took my favorite image and played around with changing the colors and glitching it in glitchlab, here are the results:

I think this could end up being a fun source of collage material but now I will need to start saving up fun images I find instead of chucking them directly in the recycling or the wood stove :D

What a geat idea to use the scanner as an art tool, @juliakponsford! 👍
Of course, this has now also fired my own imagination and I'm already thinking about how to abuse a scanner myself.

Your final results look almost a bit psychedelic. :-D
Cool stuff!

One thing I figured out, if you're putting anything thicker than paper you have to do it in a dark room or cover with a blanket otherwise too much light leaks in, would love to see your results if you try it out!

Fascinating!

Ooh I love it!

I remember I had a printer that never did what I needed it to do, and gave errors and stuff like that, but I never got around to experimenting, the results are crazy cool!

I may need to go back to an old school printer these new ones are too complicated and terrible 😂

But they create very strange things! They are abstract!🤣
