Making A Spaceship in Blender

in Alien Art Hive3 days ago

Today I started my course I bought as a Humble Bundle, which is all about making assets on Blender to be used for game development.

I've used Blender before, mainly to make buildings, but I haven't been on it for a long time, so the course has been brilliant in getting me used to using it again before jumping into building anything.

This particular course I started is about making Space Ships, which is a lot of fun, and before even opening Blender there were segments about building up some inspiration and searching images that essentially look like interesting shapes to incorporate.

The tutor said not to search spaceships for inspiration; so I looked up sci fi objects, trucks, trains and bikes to get some ideas.

Here is the first thing I made, unintentionally.

I was aiming to make a ship body to attach things to and ended up with what, to me, looked like an engine, so I ended up copying it so I had two and with that I had a basic idea for what the ship would look like.

Here is the other side of it.

I put on a subdivision of the blocky design and really liked it, so I think I'll be doing this for other areas of the ship as it gives it a more natural and sleek look.

Even though I liked it, I undone that, because I wanted to continue detailing it before making any rash decisions.

This is where I'm at so far with it.

Right now, I'm just trying to get a basic idea of it that I can sign off on before putting in some proper details.

It looks a bit like the Tentive IV, so I think I'll undo the cockpit and go with a different design for the front of the ship, but before doing that, I'll be working with this design to see if I can add anything to make it stand out and become its own thing.

Here is the back of the ship.

I will work on the connector between the engines and the body, but I really like the idea of having them attached through a connector, because in my mind it would be cool if the engines could swivel to propel itself.

Nothing too crazy, but I'm thinking if they moved at around 90 degrees, and then I can add other thrusters to the front, bottom and top.

As the course goes on I'll be learning how to rig and animate this, and that is the section I'm really looking forward to. But, I'm not getting impatient and would like to focus on building it first. I am maintaining the idea of movement though, so that I can build with intent.
