Surrealist Colorful Portrait of a Couple - The lovers

Today I want to share something that I had in mind for a while because wanted to get back to the portraits series in surrealism.

You know by some of my posts that I am a hopeless romantic, I love" LOVE" and that is something that is always an inspiration to me, in my art and also in my music.

In this particular work, the main focus is SPIRITUAL LOVE, and that is something that is very special. The connection of two souls that sometimes seems too perfect to be true.
You know what they say, opposites attract or the expression "to find my other half" and stuff like that, it means to find in other person something that completes us and I find that so beautiful and poetic.

To express this metaphore in an art form, I wanted to capture with a flower and a hummingbird, the first represents the feminine and the bird represents the masculine, in a symbolic way.

PROCESS
So first of all, I had the idea in my head but to be honest I didn't had clue on how to make them, I was hesitating to make it more like an abstract idea, so I tried a few sketches, but the idea was cool but for some reason I didn't find the right way to do it, the idea was cool because they both were united in a shape of a heart.

I knew I wanted to make a flower of China (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) because it's tge most popular in my city and the color is very girly. We call it cucarda in english I think is Shoe flower or hibiscus, in many cultures they symbolizes beauty, feminity and young and romantic love, so it was perfect for this project.

So I didn't know how to make the hummingbird at the beggining but when I made abstract heart it was like he was wearing some renaissance clothing, and that was like a good idea, so I scratched the abstract and made it like a swiss army
looking soldier.

That's what I love about surrealism you never know where it's gonna take you, you just let it go and let your imagination guide you where ever it goes.
Now for the colors of the clothing of both characters I did search references because the more realistic the funnier it would look!

So what I did was I did a quick search on the swiss army, and it turns out it was military from the XVI century, so I ended up on pinterest with this link:

I was happy that those colors were so alive, and matched with the happy theme!

But the head of the bird looked too simple and too cartoonish, so I did another search for humming birds and also on pinterest I found this little guy:

The angle of the head was surprisingly perfect for the flower, because it looks like he is focused on the upper part of the flower.

For the colors of the lady flower I was inspired by Juana Seymour.

And I finally ended up happy with the result!

This project was really fun to make because as you can see in the process at first I didn't know what to expect and to see it complete it's very satisfying!

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog post and share with me this journey into creativity with surreal art!

Until next time with more dreamy and crazy ideas!
