Hello on a Monday afternoon!
How are you doing today? I’m at the office, and it’s one of those boring ole days, so I thought I might as well update my blog —
I have only just realised I opened my very first jute pumpkin pod. Not only that but one that was planted by my own hands and I don’t have pictures. That skipped my mind, I should have documented the event as a seasoned gardener. It was so small because it’s growth had been stunted due to bad pruning a.k.a one of the neighbours cut off the mother stem so badly it couldn’t produce new leaves and the pod at some point just stopped getting bigger. Said alleged culprit was approached today and questioned.
“Did you cut my pumpkin recently” I asked nicely.
“Yesterday?” She asks back.
“No, not yesterday but recently. Someone has been cutting my pumpkin plant badly”. I reply.
“Oh sorry”, she replies back and then turns and walks away.
Oh sorry that what folks? “Oh sorry I’ve been taking vegetables from your garden without your permission and damaging your plants” or, “Oh sorry, I don’t know what’s you’re talking about but sorry”.
But then I had a pod to take inside and butcher and butcher I did because I had no idea how I was supposed to open this thing. I just took a marchete and hacked it into two. Which turns out to be a bad idea because I damaged a lot of seeds coz they got cut into as well. But the good news is that we have about 15 seeds that look viable. I set them on a tray out in the sun to dry. Wo I’m thinking that even though the pod never got to grow bigger to reach it’s full potential. The plant still had enough stored energy coming from the roots to mature the pods. I don’t know what it is but I’m happy the pod was successful because I want to start another pumpkin patch with all the lessons I’ve learned and I was determined not to buy new seeds. I want seeds from my own plant. One thing is certain, my pumpkin leaves taste different from the store bought ones and I suspect it could be a pesticide situation because of how I battle the night bugs eating the leaves.
I can’t believe I just spent three paragraphs on my garden. However I made this experimental resolutions like a stripe of film and I’m not quite sure how it’s going to be displayed here.
I tried to post the video of this piece on TwitX to attach it here but my internet is dragging the upload and now my afternoon has turned into early evening so have a wonderful rest of the week folks. Bye!!!
