Welcome to my Hive blog, a small art space. Today I want to present a drawing practice that I did with much affection, it is a portrait of a beautiful girl, but the interesting thing is the grayscale technique I used, a few months ago I wanted to try a drawing style in this style, but the results were not as expected, perhaps due to lack of practice, I had not been really satisfied. Due to the result I got with the skull design in my previous post, I decided to use again this technique applied to a portrait. I consider that this time it was much better than the previous time, since the final drawing was much more natural, although I still need to refine some details I think I'm on a better way, it's just a matter of practice.

Sean todos bienvenidos a mi blog de Hive, un pequeño espacio de arte. Hoy les quiero presentar una práctica de dibujo que hice con mucho cariño, es un retrato de una hermosa chica, pero lo interesante es la técnica a escala de grises que use, hace unos meses atrás quise incursionar probando un estilo de dibujo a este estilo, pero los resultado no fueron los esperados, quizás por la falta de práctica, no había quedado realmente satisfecho. Debido al resultado que obtuve con el diseño de la calavera en mi anterior post, me anime a usar nuevamente esta técnica aplicada a un retrato. Considero que esta vez me fue mucho mejor a la vez anterior, ya que el dibujo final quedo mucho más natural, aunque todavía falte refinar algunos detalles creo que voy por un mejor camino, ya solo es cuestión de práctica.

A continuación les muestro el paso a paso del desarrollo de la ilustración.

Drawing development / Desarrollo ✏️

This technique consists mainly in making the drawing completely in grayscale or black and white. For convenience I divide the design into three main sections, which are: body, clothing and hair, and of course the background, but we leave that to the last. When we have the design completed, we apply the color using different mixing methods.

Esta técnica consiste principalmente en realizar el dibujo completamente en escala de grises o blanco y negro. Para mayor comodidad divido el diseño en tres secciones principales, que son: cuerpo, vestimenta y cabello, y por supuesto el fondo, pero eso lo dejamos a lo último. Cuando ya tenemos el diseño culminado, aplicamos el color usando diferentes métodos de mezcla.

As always, we start the drawing with a sketch, we define the proportions of the drawing with all the details that compose it. This time I chose a ¾ pose, with a placid look and abundant wavy hair. In another layer I proceed to place a gray color as a base, and lightly shading some of the areas of it.

Como siempre, iniciamos el dibujo con un boceto, definimos las proporciones del mismo con todos los detalles que lo componen. Esta vez elegi una pose a ¾, con una mirada placida y abundante cabello ondeante. En otra capa procedo a colocar un color gris como base, y sombreando levemente algunas de las zonas del mismo.

In this step I was detailing a little more the expressions of the face, to the point where I stopped using the sketch layer. I am also continuously shading the different sections of the portrait and applying small areas of light. This process is slow and continuous so as not to darken too much.

En este paso fui detallando un poco más las expresiones del rostro, a tal punto donde ya dejo de usar la capa del boceto. Además voy sombreando continuamente las diferentes secciones del retrato y aplicando pequeñas zonas de luz. Este proceso es lento y continuo para no oscurecer demás.

When we already have a somewhat defined base where the shadows and highlights go, we begin to use the methods of blend, multiply and add, to achieve more contrast in the work, several layers are used, depending on how much contrast you want to achieve. When you get the desired result, we join all the layers to obtain a single drawing to which to apply the color.

Cuando ya tenemos una base algo definida de donde van las sombras y brillos, empezamos a usar los métodos de mezcla multiplicar y añadir, para lograr más contraste en la obra, se usan varias capas, según que tanto contraste quieras lograr. Cuando obtienes el resultado deseado, unimos todas las capas para obtener un dibujo único al cual aplicar el color.

This step turns out to be the easiest, since with the previous steps we only concentrate on the shadows and highlights of the artwork. Here we finally use the blend overlay method, and start drawing the different parts of the design, I advise you to use the mask tool, so you don't go out of the drawing area. You can also use the blend add to highlight a little more those small areas of brightness that give more life to the drawing.

Este paso resulta ser el más fácil, ya que con las etapas anteriores solo nos concentramos en las sombras y brillos de la obra. Acá finalmente usamos el método de mezcla superposición, y empezamos a dibujar las diferentes partes del diseño, les aconsejo usar la herramienta mascara, para no salirse del área de dibujo. Además pueden usar a parte la mezcla añadir para resaltar un poco más esas pequeñas zonas de brillo que le dan más vida al dibujo.
