My little walk through the time and memories. The town of Sambir

It was a good day. The day when everything goes as it should.
I was taking one of my wards, the cat Plyamka, to her new family. People from Sambir liked her. This town is located 70 km from Lviv, so to get there I found a blablakar and got to the right place without incident (hurrah!).
The cat, as I expected, was frightened by the new situation and hid under the bench in the house...
The people turned out to be good and patient, so despite my worries, I had to leave them (Cat stories I'll tell you another time).

То був гарний день. День, коли все складається, як потрібно.
Я відвозила в сім'ю одну з моїх підопічних, кицю Плямку. Вона сподобалась людям зі Самбора. Це містечко розташоване за 70 км від Львова, отож щоб дістатися туди я знайшла блаблакар і без пригод (ура!) дісталася до потрібного місця.
Киця, як я того і очікувала, злякалася нової обстановки та сховалась під лавку на балконі...
Люди виявилися хороші і терплячі, отож незважаючи на хвлювання я змушена була їх покинути (Кошачі історії - іншим разом).

I still had some time, so I decided to take a walk through the charming old town. The first mention dates back to 1241. Initially, the town was located 18 km from here, where Stary (Old) Sambir is now. Later, it was destroyed by the Mongols and people moved to a more protected settlement in the remote forest on the bank of the Dnister river, that is, here.
I have been here twice. The autumn Sambir of about 2007 has stuck in my memory... And now it's a magical spring around!

У мене ще було трохи часу, то ж вирішила прогулятись чарівним старовинним містечком. Перша згадка про місто походить з 1241 року. Спочатку місто знаходилось за 18 км звідси, там де зараз Старий Самбір. Згодом його знищили монголи під час навали і люди переселилися у більш захищене поселення в глухому лісі на березі Дністра, тобто сюди.
Колись я бувала тут. Здається двічі. У моїй пам'яті засів осінній похмурий Самбір приблизно 2007 року... Але зараз на вулиці чарівна весна!

All I remembered from the last trip was Rynok Square and the beautiful Town Hall. Many towns in Galicia were built exactly according to this European principle. The heart of the city is Rynok Square. That's why I had déjà vu while walking here. I love such a towns for theirs leisure and silence, for the absent of the crowd.

Все що я пам'ятала з минулої мандрівки - це площу Ринок і красуню Ратуша. Отож спочатку побродила тут. Багато містечок на Галичині побудовані саме за таким європейським принципом. Серце міста - це площа Ринок і ратуша, де збиралась міська влада. Тому гуляючи тут у мене виникало дежа вю. Згадувала інші подбні містечка. Я їх люблю за неспішність і тишину. За відстуність натовпу. За непідвладність часу.

The uniqueness of this Town Hall is its ancient age, it dates back to the mid-1600s, and in the 19th century it was reconstructed. The portal (with some additions) also dates from that time. It is not surprising that the building belongs to the monuments of national importance.

Унікальністю саме цієї Ратуші є її давній вік, датується серединою 1600х років, а в 19 столітті була реконструкція. Портал (з деякими доповненнями) теж походить з того часу. Аж не віриться... Не дивно, що будівля належить до пам'яток національного значення.

In front of the entrance to the Town Hall there are cannons and a commemorative plaque. These cannons come from the battle in Italy in 1859.

Перед входом в Ратушу стоять гармати і пам'ятна табличка про те, що вони походять з битви в Італії 1859 р.

A forged coat of arms of the city with a deer and a sword hangs on the wall.
It symbolizes the sword of Petro Konashevych-Sagaidachny. This famous commander and hetman, chieftain of Zaporizhska Sich was born in the nearby village of Kulchytsi.
He managed to turn the Cossacks into a single military force that neighboring states could count on. For the victory over the Turks in the Battle of Khotyn, the king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth presented this sword to Sagaidachny and knighted the Cossacks.

На стіні висить кований герб міста із оленем, рік першої згадки і меч. Він символізує меч Петра Конашевича-Сагайдачного. Цей відомий полководець і гетьман, кошовий отаман Запоріжської Січі народився в селі Кульчиці неподалік. Він зумів перетворити козаків у єдину військову силу, з якою рахувались сусідні держави. За перемогу над турками у битві під Хотином король Речі Посполитої подарував цей меч Сагайдачному і посвятив козаків у лицарі.

Eventually, my legs led me to the massive building of the organ hall. This is the former church of St. Stanislav of the Bernardine monastery, built in the Baroque style in 1698. There used to be wonderful organ music concerts here every week. It would be interesting to get on one!

Згодом мої ноги самі мене повели до масивної будівлі органного залу. Це колишній костел Св. Станіслава монастиря бернардинів, збудований у стилі бароко у 1698 році. Колись щотижня тут бували чудові концерти органної музики. Було б цікаво якось потрапити на один з них!

Одразу за цим комплексом я помітила блакитні стіни ще однієї старовинної церкви і згадала її з моїх минулих подорожей. Церква Валентина! Мабуть, з кожної подорожі ми виносимо якісь факти, які запам'ятовуються на все життя. А щось забувається...
Ця невелика приземиста церква 1738 року будівництва присвячена Різдву Богородиці і належить греко-католицькій конфесії. Що цікаво тут є мощі святого Валентина, покровителя закоханих. А також є чудотворна ікона Матері Божої. На жаль храм був зачинений. А невелику площу перед входом перетворили на стоянку авто.

Then I noticed the blue walls of another ancient church which I remembered from my past travels. Valentine's Church!
This small squat church, built in 1738, is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and belongs to the Greek Catholic denomination. Interestingly, there are relics of St. Valentine, the patron saint of lovers. And there is also a miraculous icon of the Mother of God. Unfortunately, the temple was closed.

I found myself on the square again and had a little snack in a cafe, admiring the Town Hall. I had a long-standing dream of climbing to the top of the tower. Some gentleman said that the tour guide comes after 2 p.m., but I didn't want to wait that long. And so I noticed small people up on the observation deck of the town hall.

Покружлявши я знову опинилася на площі і трішки перекусила в кафе, милуючись Ратушею. У мене була давня мрія вилізти на вершечок вежі. Якийсь пан сказав, що екскурсовод буває після 14.00, але я не хотіла чекати так довго. І ось я помітила маленьких людей-мурашок вгорі на оглядовому майданчику.

This meant that the entrance to the stairs was open. Perfectly!

In a few minutes I was already climbing the steep stairs. The clock mechanism caught my attention. As I found out, it was made in Prague at the end of the 19th century.

За кілька хвилин вже піднімалася крутими сходами вверх. Мою увагу привернув годинниковий механізм. Як я дізналася, він зроблений у Празі ще вкінці 19 ст.

The view from the top was simply magnificent. My favorite temples are in the palm of your hand. However, the tourist group had to go down already. I did not want to delay them and decided that I will return here with my friends and then we will also listen to the tour guide's story...

Зверху краєвид був просто чудовий. Мої улюблені храми як на долоні. Проте туристична група вже мала спускатися вниз... Я вирішила, що повернусь сюди з друзями і тоді ми також послухаємо розповідь екскурсовода...

On the way to the station, I came across another marvel of architecture. This is the church of St. John the Baptist. A unique ancient temple, built in 1530, on the border between Gothic and Renaissance. I went into the yard. And nowadays it is impressive with its size.

І на завершення - дорогою на вокзал я натрапила на ще одне чудо архітектури. Це костел Св. Івана Хрестителя. Унікальний старовинний храм, збудований у 1530 році, на межі готики і Ренесансу. Я зайшла у подвір'я... І в наш час він вражає своїми розмірами.

The building has strict outlines, without excessive decorations on the facade. The main high tower and small semicircular protrusions ("semi-towers") on the sides attract attention. The walls on the sides are reinforced with buttresses. The spirit of antiquity is felt!

Будівля має строгі обриси, без надміру декорацій на фасаді. Привертає увагу головна висока вежа і невеликі напівкруглі виступи ("напіввежі") по боках. Стіни по боках укріплені контрфорсами. Відчувається дух старовини!

It is not easy to completely cover the building with a camera! I also spied the interior through the open front door. And in the yard there is a monument to Pope John Paul II, who visited Ukraine in 2001. The church is active, it belongs to the Roman Catholic community. Apparently, it is very beautiful and solemn here during the service.

Повністю охопити будівлю камерою непросто! Також я підгледіла інтер'єр через відчинені вхідні двері. Костел діючий, він належить римо-католицькій громаді. Мабуть під час служби тут дуже гарно і урочисто...

Ось така невелика насичена прогулянка у мене вийшла. Я радію, що побачилась із Самбором - давнім моїм другом. Будете поряд - завітайте. За містом вже помало починаються гори...

That's how I got a short, rich walk. I was glad to see Sambor, my old friend.
