We've made a lot of improvements since I wrote that post :-) Current version (1.28.0), even though it has to handle 10 millions blocks more, will run really amazingly well on 16GB RAM systems :-)
I'm running a node on OptiPlex 3000 thin client with only 8 GB or RAM and it's working great, while consuming roughly 4W of power :)
