Magnetars

Magnetars are an extremely powerful form of neutron star.

Neutron stars are formed when massive stars (several times the mass of the Sun) die at the end of their lives in the gigantic flash of a supernova explosion.

They are known to rotate rapidly and have incredibly intense magnetic fields, the strongest known in the universe. These objects are millions of times more powerful than the strongest magnets on Earth.

These extremely powerful magnetic fields generate extraordinary phenomena, such as gamma-ray bursts and magnetic storms.

Magnetars can also experience events called soft flare bursts, releasing massive amounts of energy in the form of X-ray radiation.

Magnetars erupt without warning, erupting for hours or months, before they begin to fade and eventually disappear.

Most known magnetars have been detected only a decade ago by X-ray telescopes following a high-energy burst, but they have also been observed emitting radio pulses very similar to those emitted by pulsars.

If a magnetar were located one-sixth of the way to the Moon (~64,000 km), it would erase all the credit card data on Earth!
