Sprite lightning is a luminous phenomenon that occurs in the atmosphere during thunderstorms.
Unlike the traditional lightning we are familiar with, sprites are found at the top of thunderstorm clouds, in the ionosphere.
These flashes of light have irregular shapes and can appear as columns, halos or discs, are usually reddish, orange or purple in colour, and have an ephemeral, ethereal appearance.
Sprites are produced by intense electrical discharges that occur between the thundercloud and the ground; these discharges generate very strong electric fields that ionise the upper atmosphere, creating these impressive flashes of light.
Observing sprites can be challenging, as they occur at high altitude and last only a few milliseconds, but impressive images of sprites have been captured through high-speed photography and scientific research.
These atmospheric phenomena are truly amazing and show us the beauty and complexity of our planet - sprites remind us that there is still so much to discover in the vast and wondrous world around us.
