DS9 is a good example. With that show, they started to shift to a more continuity-based series. That is, where the characters actually remember what happened in old episodes and there was some continuous story instead of the completely independent episodes of most series prior. It wasn't perfect, but it gave us a feeling of progression. And we still got 20+ episodes a season! It was a nice balance.
