Day 1138: 5 Minute Freewrite CONTINUATION: Wednesday - Prompt: sweet potato

The comfort of sweet potato fries before planning an attempt at corruption … wasted, morally, but it tastes good going down.

Thomas Bolling and John Ludwell Lofton were at the Wide Eyes Diner, planning their Sunday activities in a few of the local Black churches they had identified as potential places to find a minister or two to feed them some information about why Black people in Lofton County were moving their money, and where.

Going to ask, or carefully reading the Lofton County Free Voice – oh, that was too demeaning.

The old way – using money to buy a slave – was seen as much better.

“Here are $2,500 in cashier's checks, and a schedule,” Mr. Bolling said to Mr. Ludwell-Lofton. “Two 8:00am services, two 11:00am services, and a 3:00 service. The key is to appear to be a White man drawn in by the music. Black folks think we all just love their style gospel music, so just wait close by and ease up there when the music gets loud … just keep saying, 'The music, man, the music!' Just stand there and look amazed, and then ask the usher for an envelope and say, 'I have an appointment, but that was amazing! I want to leave an offering, and I plan to make time to come back!' Put that $500 check and a card into the envelope and walk away. Just as soon as the counting starts, they'll find it and the minister will be soon be calling.

“That's when we go into talking about how we are bankers by trade, and were really inspired and are thinking differently about the whole community – words like 'the humanity, 'the beauty,' 'the dignity' are good – and how we can be more of service with banking services from our banks. Let the minister say whatever he is going to say next, and then pop the real question: 'Is there a model bank we should learn from right now?' In ten ministers, we are bound to get some information.”

It would have been $5,000 cheaper just to go ask the question.

But, some people only feel they have power when they are flexing the only type of power they feel others do not have and would sell anything to get: money.

That, and the ability to eat a whole plate worth of sweet potato fries to give a starch nap to any remnant of a conscience.
