The beam of our bike lights cut through velvety night as we pedaled, an eerie crunch behind growing louder.
-Someone's there, -gasped Marcos.
I dismissed it but then heard it myself - heavy footfalls matching our cadence yet remaining back in shadow.
A predator toying with its prey.
We sped on in panic, whatever followed keeping pace yet keeping its distance, content to trail us under the stars.
Only when lights from town rose ahead did that unearthly stalking fade, but its memory would haunt our dreams for years to come.
What silent monster had we met that night?
