If you've ever tried lamb tamales wrapped in banana leaves, you know what's good. The flavor of the meat blends perfectly with the coarsely ground masa and spices. It's such a culinary experience that your head aches from the sheer pleasure. Here in the town of Bustamante, it's a rare treat, since it's impossible to find some of the spices, let alone banana leaves.
Last Holy Week, I had the joy of a visit from my godmother, who comes from Naranjos, Veracruz. I like her a lot because she's always cheerful, and she also has the habit of bringing me Oaxaca cheese. This time there wasn't any cheese, but she did bring a couple of large lamb tamales. My mouth was watering, but I wanted to enhance the experience with a couple of Bohemias beers. My godmother loves those beers, so I don't need to say she was thrilled to come with me to get some. The beer depot is only two blocks away, so we decided to walk. She told me she was very happy because she was going to be a grandmother soon, and that my cousin Evelyn had just finished law school. Blocks go by quite quickly when you're having such a pleasant conversation. Things weren't going perfectly, but when we opened the door, we realized the neighbor's cats were eating the tamales. I grabbed a piece of dirt and threw it at the cats, but it was too late.

Si han probado los tamales de borrego en hoja de plátano, saben lo que es bueno. El sabor de la carne se mezcla con la masa martajada y las especias. Es una experiencia culinaria tal, que te duele la cabeza de tanto placer. Acá en el pueblo de Bustamante es privativo, ya que no es posible encontrar algunas de las especies y menos las hojas de plátano.
La semana santa pasada tuve la dicha de recibir la visita mi madrina que viene desde Naranjos, Veracruz. Me cae muy bien porque siempre está alegre, pero además tiene la costumbre de traerme quesillo. Está vez no hubo quesillo, pero trajo un par de tamales de borrego de los grandes. De agua se me hacía la boca, pero quise aumentar la experiencia con un par de cervezas Bohemias. A mi madrina Le encantan esas cervezas, no tengo que decir que estaba encantada con acompañarme a traer algunas. El depósito está solo dos cuadras por lo que decidimos irnos caminando. Me platicó que estaba muy feliz porque pronto sería abuela y que mi prima Evelyn Acaba de terminar la carrera de derecho. Cuadras se pasan bastante rápido cuando vas platicando tan ameno, no iba excelente pero al abrir la puerta nos dimos cuenta de que los gatos del vecino se estaban comiendo los tamales. Tomé un trozo de tierra y se lo aventé a los gatos pero ya era demasiado tarde.
