Most of the musicians accompanying an artist are session musicians, they get paid for that time to do a task. Maybe to backup the artist or play instruments. They are there for that time, except they are contacted again, that is it.
A session musician is paid to do his job, a common example are artist that go on tour or performing live music. The artist cannot be the one to sing and back up for himself at the same time.
Session musicians are usually professionals because they do not have enough time to bond with the artist before performance. Most of them perform well, even beyond expectations. You would think they are all in a band, because of the way they work together.
