Let Me Breathe, a five minute freewrite

"Let me breathe," she had said. But he didn't think he was suffocating her.

Not at first.

He thought it was what she wanted: for him to call her every day. She'd said it was cute, when he phoned her just before bedtime to wish her good night. And so then, he started contacting her more often, throughout the day.

"Not now," she'd hiss. "I'm at work. I told you I can't take personal calls at work." So, he'd text her at lunch. And when she didn't answer he'd turn up at her office, hang around the reception area, hoping to catch her as she nipped out for a sandwich.

But then the security guard asked him to move away from the building. And, "If you wouldn't mind, sir, could you stop coming to this building, unless you have an appointment with someone."

He didn't want to get her into trouble, so he smiled and nodded and thanked the man and walked around the corner. He started to follow her to work, one morning. When he lost his job, due to all the time he was taking off to "make sure his girlfriend was okay", he wasn't sad - he could dedicate himself to her fully, now.
