Brian sits at the bus stop fiddling with an empty bag of dry-roasted peanuts. His last nut just fell on the floor and he is wondering if anyone would notice if he just reached down and picked it up off the floor.
It has been more than three seconds since he dropped it, so technically violates the law his mother told him about, but he doesn't care.
He is still hungry and that nut was meant to be in his mouth.
It was raining earlier so the ground shouldn't be too dirty, should it?
And anyway, he thought germs were good for the gut now. Something to do with the Biome.
That's what Kirsty told him when eating her overnight oats, which just looked like wet bird seed to him.
The bus pulls up and Brian takes advantage of the distraction to grab the nut, pop it into his mouth, before he climbs onto the bus, flashing his pass on the machine that beeps softly at him.
Thank you, too, he says.
Not out loud, obviously.
He doesn't want people to think he is weirder than he actually is.
He chooses a seat at the back where he can watch people get on and off, just in case he is being followed.
He doesn't think he is being tracked today, but you can never be too careful.
