At the next bus stop a woman with a child gets on, the woman struggling with a pushchair and the child dragging a large stuffed toy - a rabbit - by its long ears.
Brian remembers a story his sister, Maud, used to tell him about Sydney the Swearing Rabbit.
He thinks she may have made up the stories, but he isn't sure.
He decides to search the internet when he reaches the library. Perhaps he can find the stories.
If Maud made them up, they will be lost forever.
Poor Maud died three years ago. Brian shudders and tries to make his brain change the subject.
He doesn't like thinking about The End of Maud.
He looks away from the toy rabbit and out of the window as the London streets flash by. He watches a cyclist try to keep up with the bus and then overtake as it pulls into the next stop.
No one gets on.
An older man takes a while to get off, struggling with a bag and a walking stick.
Brian notes that no one offers to help the man.
He wonders if he should get up and help, but he is at the back of the bus, and before he can get moving, the man is out the door, and the bus pulls off.
