Mata-Tigre Nation

There was a time professionals devoted their time, talents, and energy to their respective jobs. They knew that they would enjoy 25 to 30 years of stability, a handsome severance payment, and an inflation-free pension to live comfortably whatever amount of years they had left. They could guarantee their children, and even their grandchildren, education, health, and social security to pursue even higher goals in life.

This life project could actually be realized even by unskilled workers.

Matar tigres, or un trigrito (literally to kill tigers, a little tiger), the slangs in Venezuelan Spanish for a side hustle, was unheard of among professionals. We moved from there to a tiger-killing society where everyone, even with academic degrees, must have two or more side jobs or gigs, just to barely survive. It became institutionalized when government officials, in their attempt to avoid responsibility for the destruction of the economy and the indigent condition of 85% of the population, passed their responsibility unto workers’ lack of creativity and/or resourcefulness.

When the current minister of education, Yelitze Santaella (her last name sounds as if composed of the words saint-she), was governor of the state of Monagas, she infamously sent teachers to sell bananas, vegetables, or cookies whenever they protested their meagre salaries. She asked them to be creative and find side hustles to cope with the hard economic situation. To the female teachers, she said they should sell food or clean houses in their free time.

Now, she dictates (?) national education policies. You can imagine how receptive she can be to salary demands.

Every ministry in Venezuela is ruled by two-face scums who claim humble origins on the one hand, but who live like royalty and viscerally reject the rightful demands from those whose livelihood depends on their signature.

However, when they have the opportunity to address a global audience, like the UN, they boast about how much they care about teachers, elders, menial workers, or whoever they represent. In this opportunity, the flaming minister, denying all the evidence that proves otherwise, assured the world that teachers’ wellbeing are the government’s main goal. Another phony speech for the annals of leftist infamy.
