I think that, like sweeping your house at night, it was believed that buying salt was something only brujos (men or women) did.
There was the belief that some dark brujos could shape-shift, turn into bird or worse. If you were strong enough or lucky enough to battle any of these shape-shifters and beat them up, you had to yell, "come for salt tomorrow" at them; that way they would reveal their human identity to you next day.
Yeah, it was that fucked up.
