Small beginnings

in Freewriters7 months ago (edited)

My mum always told me, "do not despise small beginnings". Honestly I hated that saying. I was tired of small. Tired of our 2 room apartment Which contained our family of 4. Tired of hand-me-down uniforms, tired of counting coins for bread. I wanted big, fast and now.

When I started my hair braiding business last year, I was ashamed. It was just me a plastic chair, may table with my few tools and stuff on it under the neem tree in our compound. My friends with their office jobs would walk past and I'll pretend to be on my phone.

But something happened madam Aisha from next door became my first customer. Then she told her sister that told her coworkers. And so on. No lie I was good at what I do,was just lacking a suitable place. Six months later, I had to get two assistants.

Yesterday I signed the lease for my own small shop. As I hung my certificates on the wall, my mum's words came back to me. This time, they didn't feel like a consolation but like a prophecy.
