Fledgling: Part 100

Greetings Readers

Snaffie is getting so big now, and it's nice to see how his personality is growing. Right now, he has discovered the small of my back as the most comfortable spot in the house...I don't even know what to say.

Here is a picture of him figuring out the hood this morning.

With that out of the way, let's add the final piece before we start Kay's arch. Please enjoy!

“Ah! Daughter. So good of you to not forget about me in your old age.” Said Silens as she hugged Saita to her chest.

“Mother.” Sighed Saita softly, knowing that all Silens ever wanted was for her to call her by this title. Something she never had.

“You do not call me by that title. Why now?” whispered the woman as she looked beyond to see the other who had come with her.

While the face didn’t shock Silens, the power did. This was the Serpent. She was sure of it. She had felt it in the dying days of the fight against the creature. What she hadn’t expected was for it to resemble a young Saita. She looked exactly like the half-starved girl that Silens had first met, so many years ago.

She sucked breath between her teeth and released Saita before looking the Serpent up and down. Was this why she had felt the need to be here so soon after Baks’ death? The young woman turned her blindness to the woman. A similar scar to Saita’s shone back.

“What would you ask of me, Daughter?”

“Forgiveness.” Said Saita softly.

“To the one who had my firstborn murdered?”

Saita seemed to flinch, not realising just how much Silens could see. She then scowled when she noticed Kay was grinning.

“There is nothing humorous about this.” She snapped at the Serpent.

“That is not a grin of humour, Daughter. That is the grin of one who is terrified and doesn’t want it to be known. She is quite terrified of what you are to ask of me.”

Saita turned to look at the other woman, but she had turned away, suddenly finding an old, gnarled tree far more interesting.

“I need to fix things.” Said Saita softly. “Make sure that things happen the way that they should. I can’t do that with her following me.”

“Because her powers are gone?”

“Not all of them.” Muttered the other woman, clearly eavesdropping on the conversation.

She needs to regain her humanity.

Silens nodded her head. She understood, and while she had the capacity for forgiveness, this was something that was a little too close to home for her to agree willingly.

“No one in court will have her here.” Said Silens. “My forgiveness is irrelevant.”

“What if…” started Saita. “It wasn’t here or now.”

The “now” caught Silens off guard, but she remained patient, waiting for Saita to tell her what she needed to.

“What if I take you home?”

Silens wanted to scoff. Her home was a barren wasteland. Destroyed by the Kai that had come to destroy the people. There was nothing there but dust and ghosts. Silens considered the word “now.” If Saita was going to make sure that things played out the way they were supposed to, then that could only mean one thing.

Silens could go home. She could live out the rest of her days on the planet that had birthed her. The cost, however, would be that she would have to take the Serpent with her.

“What if she doesn’t want forgiveness?”

“I don’t!” snapped the woman.

“What she wants is immaterial right now. I can’t have her with me, and I can’t leave her abandoned.”

“Why me, Saita?”

Saita sighed and said, “If anyone can forgive her for what she has done, it’s you.”

“Because I forgave the Kai for what they did? You do know that Baks killed their king, threw their society into anarchy that is yet to recover? I didn’t forgive them, Saita. They are unimportant in my life.”

“You forgave me.” She said softly. “For the death of your son from this time.”
Silens opened her mouth to say that she never blamed Saita, but she stopped. Deep down, she knew that was untrue. She had blamed the faceless princess and her maniac father. Even to this day, she struggled to be in the same room as Karesh for what he had done.

She looked to the woman once more and then asked, “What is her base ability?”

Saita wasn’t even sure, but she heard Kay sigh heavily before the woman placed a hand on the tree before her. Within seconds, the branches were drooping, and leaves were dropping all around them. Kay then pulled her hand away and immediately created a wolf’s head-shaped helm with glaring white energy before placing it on her head. The lower jaw dropped open, revealing teeth.

“There is more you must know.” Started Saita.

Silens raised a hand to stop her. “Does this have anything to do with why the Serpent is being left in my care? If so, then I don’t want to know.”

Saita nodded her head and said nothing else.

“You can steal and use energy?” Silens addressed the woman.

“Yes.”

Silens snorted once and said, “It’ll work. She’ll fit in, but will be much shorter than my people. And with no tail, there will be discrimination. Nothing I don’t think she isn’t capable of handling. Very well, Daughter. I will take the Serpent until such time that you return for her.”

“Her has a name.” said the Fell Dragon.

“Indeed, Kay. I have been waiting for you.”
