Fledgling: Part 101

in Freewriters4 days ago

Greetings Readers

I know I am a little late with the update, but I had a heck of a week with a ton of students, and my mind was just done with the computer. Here is a Snaffie picture to make up for it.

He likes to sit there when I'm gaming or writing.

Anyway, please enjoy the late update!

Silens hadn’t asked for a specific time. She only wanted enough time that she would never have to witness the end of her people again or ever run into herself. Other than that, she didn’t care all too much.

Once placed within her distant past, it only took her a few days to find out what she needed to know about the time and place where Saita had left her and Kay. While the time she had come from hadn’t enjoyed any of the modern conveniences she had grown used to with the Saith, this time was even more backwards.

“No vaccines, few antibiotics, a few antivenoms, no true electricity yet, and everyone still living off the land.” She muttered.

“So, the sticks, then?” said Kay.

“To us, yes. Not those who live here. There is a village close by, and a house we can make use of, but we’ll need to spruce it up. There’s a body we must remove.”

Kay didn’t even flinch. “Nothing new to me.”

“And ideally, you shouldn’t speak.”

“Because this is an alien world and you’re scared I won’t know the language?”

“No, I’m worried you’ll get into a fight. While my people can create objects from energy, stealing energy isn’t something that we can do. I’d prefer you not to murder someone. Intentional or not.”

“And the body we’re supposed to remove from this house?”

“Old age. Several days old. The stink has permeated everything.”

“And you want to live there?”

“It is a shaman’s hut. It is normally how a shaman finds living arrangements. Normally, an apprentice would have buried the shaman, but no one has come to the house in a while. I think the village may simply be too far away.”

Kay wrinkled her nose, knowing exactly what the two of them would have to do. Silens waved away her thoughts, knowing exactly what she was thinking.

“I will show you how to bury my people. You will not do a half-arsed job for the forest beasts to get to the old man.”

“Okay, okay! My god, calm down. I know Saita asked you to babysit me, but I don’t need this kind of…where are you going?”

Silens was already making her way to the cottage. She was used to places like this. She had grown up around them. She had loved the shaman close to her village as a child and had bonded well with those in the employment of her father. Each had inked her skin as she had grown.

Memories flooded back. Instincts she didn’t know she had filled her mind. She covered her mouth as she stepped into the cottage. It was old and fallen into disrepair. It didn’t help that a body had been lying and decomposing for several days.

“Dear god.” Swore Kay as she came to the entrance.

“Typical spring heat. This is common in those who have no one to look after them. There was likely no apprentice.” Silens walked into the home.

“Or the apprentice didn’t give a shit.” Kay followed.

The two women looked over the body. It was teeming with life, and several pieces were already missing.

“The bed is a lost cause, and the flooring will need to be ripped up.” Said Kay with a tilted head.

She then looked around the room, noting the bottles of unidentified dried herbs and other things she couldn’t identify.

“Anything not sealed in wax I would also bury deep.”

Silens was surprised at the knowledge that the young woman possessed.

“What? When I lived on the streets, I had to score medicine somehow. Anyone with herbal knowledge was revered and protected, and it wasn’t hard to learn.”

“Good, teaching you will not require much of my time.”

“You intend to make me an apprentice?”

“Do you have something else in mind?”

Kay wasn’t used to questions being answered by questions. She didn’t really have much of a choice. She was trapped in a time that wasn’t her own, with people who may have looked like her, but were vastly different. Saita had trusted this woman to be Kay’s keeper until such time that she deemed it necessary to return for the Fell Dragon.

On the other hand, this was a fresh start. She could walk away from who and what she had been, leaving old ghosts behind her. She had never been offered a gem like this. The only thing she had to do in return was to assist the old woman.

But was she still a dog at the end of the day? She weighed the pros and cons several times and just shrugged. It was far better than she had ever been offered, and not much was being asked of her.

“Do you want to dig the hole or should I?” she asked.
