Fledgling: Part 141

Greetings Readers

I seem to have lost a week somewhere. Sorry about the super late update. It's super short. I am struggling to find motivation to write nowadays, but I plod along.

I hope you enjoy it!

Saita wasn’t sure how she felt about what her future self had shown her. Doran had once told her how he had sat a death vigil for the Fell Dragon. At that time, Saita had relished the thought of the creature that had unravelled her life dying in agony. However, seeing what had occurred to that very Fell Dragon hit a different chord in Saita now.

She had watched the villagers care for Kay, all while the woman was deep in fevered dreams of a man that Saita had loved. It was difficult. It didn’t make sense that Kaiden had been so loving to her but had all but killed Kay in her timeline.

Even Silens was panicking. While those around her didn’t see the tension lines that Saita had come to know, they were there. Even the bags under her eyes were darkening by the hour.

“What happened?” whispered Saita, almost terrified that those beyond the veil could hear her.

“Broken leg, spent too long out in the elements. It was an accident. Her mind is fighting a force that has been long gone, but it still holds sway over her.”

Saita wanted to ask the burning question but kept it to herself. Her other self knew what she wanted to ask and said, “Yes. She is going to die from the injury.”

Saita remained silent and watched as the villagers were sent away, and Silens and another woman tried to make Kay comfortable before the other woman exited the room. Silens stayed, talking in Kay’s native tongue, trying to give her some strength, but there was nothing more she could do, not with Kay’s life force dwindling.

“Why bring me here?” asked Saita, although she already knew the answer.
“The old one cannot see me. It has to be you.”

Saita knew better than to ask why. Kay was the other side of her coin. She was important. How important or why, Saita wasn’t sure yet, but she knew it. However, she also knew that this was the very person who had tried to destroy her psyche. And while these two things were true at the same time, it was difficult to want to help.

“She cannot die.”

“She deserves this.” Saita was almost surprised at the venom that still carried in her voice.

“You know nothing about her.”

While that sentence had been delivered with no anger in it, there was a certain insistence that Saita didn’t understand.

“You will need her. Don’t make the mistake I did.”

“You keep saying that, but you never told us what you did.”

“I created the Maw.” Her future self admitted after some time.

“But how?”

“By making a selfish decision. One you are making now.”

Saita wanted to yell about her past but instead held her breath. Her other self had gone through all hell she had gone through too. There had to be a reason she needed Kay alive.

“Why?”

“Because she is the only one left. All others are now gone.”

Saita didn’t understand, but something cold bloomed in her chest.

“Did you…?” Saita tried to ask.

“You don’t want to finish that question, and you don’t want the answer. Trust me.”

Saita turned back to watch Silens collapse next to Kay. Realising what the old woman was trying to do, Saita stowed her leftover hate and stepped from the veil.

See you all hopefully next week!
