Greetings readers
Snaffie awhoos like a little werewolf.
Snaffie has filled a tiny part of the hole that was left when I lost Cupcake. He is a great writing buddy but still very young, so he's still learning the ropes. At 23 days, he has just been moved into his own cage. Now, to get him used to his brothers.
Anyway, please enjoy this update, and I enjoyed writing it.
She turned to find the giant standing behind her. He had a warm smile on his face, but it hadn’t quite extended to his eyes yet. She knew that would come later.
“What do you want?” she growled.
“You know, for the longest time, I believed that the Dragon was a monster. A beast so big that all it had to do was open its maw and swallow everything. The Wolven were a nice touch, making many believe that a true beast would be upon them one day.”
“Well, I am sorry to disappoint you.”
“Not disappointed. Upset is a better word.”
“Upset? What? Because I’m a girl?” she rounded on him.
“That no one realised how easy it would be to stop what was happening if they knew people were being taken to be made into monsters. The Dragons were never the monsters. Their creators were.”
“Well, fat lot that information means now. There will never be another Fell Dragon. It ended with me.”
“It could have ended earlier.”
That comment seemed to grab the attention of the Balance Dragon, and she warily opened her only eye to look at him disapprovingly. Bolx held his hands up and muttered some sort of apology that Kay didn’t get.
Once the Dragon closed her eye again, Bolx continued talking. He stood in the hallway across from Kay.
“So, you were trapped in Saita’s mind but would periodically come out?”
“Overlapped consciousness.” Said Kay as she turned to continue to stare at the Balance Dragon and Saita.
“Cause any trouble?”
“Nothing you and Doran couldn’t handle.”
“So, he knows too.”
“He saw me die. The first kind thing that anyone ever did for me. Ironically, at my deathbed.”
She rolled her eye and rubbed at her aching ribs.
“You know you can take a hot bath to ease the ribs, right?”
“It’s snowing, easing the pain for a few minutes only for it to come back worse isn’t something I relish feeling. Also, I doubt the boy twin will assist in pain relief. Not that it matters, I’m used to it.”
“Martin.”
“What?”
“Martin, his name is Martin, and she is Maxine.”
“Whatever.”
“Names are important, don’t you think?”
She snorted, “Yeah, right. Kay, meaning ‘rejoice’ or ‘pure’ in Greek. Do you know why my father hurled that name at me? Because ‘hey girl’ required more energy than he was willing to spend on me.”
And there it was, the look of pity on the giant’s face, but it didn’t stay there for long.
“Others might argue that it means warrior. Sounds like you were forced to become one.”
“Please! Warrior? Urgh, a rabid dog was all I was to any who had no use for me. An attack dog for those who could use me.”
Bolx sighed. Was this really the person that Saita wanted him to look after? She didn’t need looking after. Clearly, her life had marred her, and she needed no assistance or even a kind word. He shrugged his shoulders and asked, “So, are you also immortal?”
This time, Kay shrugged. “No idea. Guess we’ll see. Saita and I were approximately the same age when the System was put into place. She ages; I never did. But then again, I was sent to fight the Dragon within a year of being made into the Champion. After that, I was locked up for millennia. Still look God damned 16 but with a face that looks like it was shoved into an industrial mincer.”
Kay touched her face and then rubbed the back of her neck. “Wish Red-Eye had lopped off my head when he had had the chance. Would have ended this sooner.”
“Guess you wanted to survive.”
That statement rang very true. Kay hadn’t wanted to die. She had been promised freedom, and she was working toward that, like any good inmate. Something she had stupidly fallen for time and time again.
“I just wanted freedom. To live a life. But that was too much to ask for.” She said softly.
“Regrets?”
“Only living and continuing to believe that people would hold to their promises. I am a fool, and I am trapped once more, looking at a reality where I can’t do anything but go along with plans. I am still a dog chained to someone higher on the food chain.” She turned from the giant to those in the sitting room. “I will go rest now.”
“You know,” Bolx stepped aside to let her pass. “This 'woo-is-me' attitude does you no good.”
“Perhaps, General, but it’s the only thing no one can take away from me. I lived my life, leashed dog or not. If I want to complain, I will complain.”
Bolx clicked his tongue, “If my mother had gotten hold of you, she would have fixed this attitude right up.”
“Your mother? That’s right, the older one that looked like the Saith queen.” Kay’s voice trailed off. “You don’t know yet, do you?”
“About Red-Eye killing Brucel and Saasha? I know. Saita tried to lessen the blow. Can’t say I don’t like you very much after finding out about that. That said, knowing Saasha’s history, had Brucel died, and she was left alone again, it would have shattered her. You actually did her a favour.”
“You are trying too hard.” Kay hissed. “Just because your wife wants you to babysit me doesn’t mean that you have to.”
“I’ll keep my promise.” He said after some time.
Kay knew exactly what he meant. He had already kept that promise.
“You already did.” She said sadly as she moved past him to go to her room. Her mood now sour.
